Etihad Stadium - Premier League
Manchester City start this massive game against Chelsea top of the table, following their midweek victory over Everton at Goodison Park. The Citizens have got themselves into an incredible position considering the state of play only a week or two ago, but they need to keep up the momentum here.
Chelsea ended City’s unbeaten start to the season when the teams clashed at Stamford Bridge in December, winning 2-0. Pep Guardiola’s side won by the same scoreline in the campaign’s curtain-raising Community Shield, and did the double over their London rivals last term with a pair of 1-0 victories.
Apart from a few defensive issues, Guardiola can rotate his team following their midweek action. Benjamin Mendy is expected to miss out as he continues his recovery from knee surgery, while Vincent Kompany and Claudio Bravo are both injured.
Opposite number Maurizio Sarri will have no injuries or suspensions to worry about when he takes his place in the away dugout. He has a fully-fit squad to choose from, forgotten man Marco van Ginkel aside. Gonzalo Higuain will continue up front following a brace last weekend.
Manchester City v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
It’s light blue against royal blue on Sunday afternoon, in what could be another big weekend in the Premier League’s title race. City have bounced back from their shock defeat at Newcastle to record back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Everton. They could’ve been seven points behind Liverpool as recently as last week, but are now top on goal difference having played a game more.
Chelsea meanwhile quietened a few dissenters with a 5-0 demolition of Huddersfield last weekend. There’s no escaping the fact the Terriers are having a rotten season though, and the pressure’s still very much on Blues boss Sarri. A heavy defeat at the Etihad would bring further criticism of his methods and system.
City will look to capitalise on that, especially if Liverpool slip up again at home to Bournemouth on Saturday. The title race looks set to go down to the wire, but the Citizens know the course and distance and have so many options to call on.
The home team start as the clear favourites in the betting, priced at 8/15. They’ve won 13 of their last 14 home games in the league, scoring at least twice in each of those fixtures. Chelsea are available at 11/2, as they look to put a dent in City’s title defence. If you think this game will end in a draw, that’s 7/2.
City to win to nil at 2/1
Prior to their 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign, City won three in a row against Chelsea without conceding a single goal.
Sergio Aguero to score first at 7/2
The Argentinian striker has been quick off the mark in recent weeks, and bagged a hat-trick against Arsenal last weekend.
