Manchester City v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 02, 2018
Wembley Stadium - Community Shield
2017-18 Premier League champions Manchester City take on FA Cup winners Chelsea in the traditional Community Shield season curtain raiser on Sunday.
Chelsea won both Premier League meetings between the two teams by a 1-0 scoreline, with Bernardo Silva the match winner in Manchester and Kevin De Bruyne the hero against his old side at Stamford Bridge.
City are likely to be without summer signing Riyad Mahrez, after he suffered an ankle injury in their pre season game against Bayern Munich. Pep Guardiola has fielded a number of his youngsters during pre season, as his first team continue to return following the World Cup, and his line up against Chelsea will be a combination of youth and experience.
Chelsea will include heir new man Jorginho in midfield for his clash, as will Eden Hazard - who is yet to play under new manager Mauricio Sarri in pre season.
Manchester City v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
This game is notoriously difficult to call, as both sides are still in the middle of pre season and focused on the actual season beginning. City have won one and lost two matches in pre season - and Chelsea have won one game in normal time, and another on penalties.
Chelsea have played in two of the last three Community Shield games, losing both to Arsenal - in 2017 and 2015. City's last appearance was in 2014, where they also lost to Arsenal.
Given City's strength in depth, even at this early stage of the season, and with Sarri still looking to establish himself at Chelsea, they are clear favourites to win this one - priced at 19/20 to win inside 90 minutes.
There are normally goals in this game, with five of the last eight Shield games including over 2.5 goals scored inside normal time, and this time it should be no different.
Even with players making their way back to training and match fitness after the World Cup, there should still be enough attacking talent on display to ensure an exciting game, and an over 2.5 total goals scored bet comes in at 4/5.
Manchester City to win 2-1 at 15/2
City look in great shape to defend their Premier League title in 2018-19, with Guardiola expected to make more signings before the transfer window closes ahead of the new campaign. Chelsea are still settling, give Antonio Conte's delayed exit and Sarri's arrival, and that gives an experienced City side the edge.
Pedro to score first at 5/2
Spanish international is in strong pre season form, scoring two goals in Chelsea's two games so far, the only goals they have scored under Sarri. He is expected to start this game, and even if City do prove to be too strong for Chelsea, he will still be an attacking threat.
