Manchester City v Manchester United Predictions, Betting Tips & Previews
April 24, 2017
Thursday 27 April – Etihad Stadium – Premier League
The stakes are high in this Manchester derby, as Manchester City host Manchester United at the Etihad on Thursday evening. There’s a lot more than local pride to fight for, as both teams try to secure a top four finish. As well as Champions League qualification, there’s the small matter of Pep versus Jose too.
After going on a run of four straight victories against United, City have only won one of the last five derbies. This was a 2-1 win earlier this season at Old Trafford, when Kevin de Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho scored. Marcus Rashford was the match winner in this fixture last season, with the youngster netting the game’s only goal.
Pep Guardiola is sweating on the fitness of key duo Sergio Aguero and David Silva, after the pair both limped off in the FA Cup semi final defeat against Arsenal. Extra time at Wembley won’t have done Manchester City any favours, but the Blues could be boosted by the return of Gabriel Jesus after his metatarsal injury.
Manchester United are likely to be missing their own star duo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba. The Swedish striker is out for the season with his cruciate injury, while Pogba appeared to hurt his hamstring in the dying moments of his team’s game at Burnley. Jose Mourinho also has a defensive crisis, and is likely to be without Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
Manchester City v Manchester United Preview and Predictions
Champions League qualification would have been the bare minimum expected of both Guardiola and Mourinho when the two managers took up the reigns in Manchester last summer. Both bosses have the distinct possibility of missing out on Europe’s elite club competition though, making this derby absolutely massive.
After losing against Arsenal at Wembley, this is the first time that Guardiola will end a season without a trophy in his entire managerial career. Losing out on Champions League football though would be a complete disaster for both manager and club. The Blues are two points behind Liverpool in third, but have two games in hand over Klopp’s team. They’re a single point ahead of United, and start the derby as 10/11 favourites.
United meanwhile have the Europa League to fall back on, and a decent semi final draw against Celta Vigo. They’d love to take the pressure off their European games by securing a top four Premier League finish. To deny City or Liverpool a place in the Champions League is also an extra motivation. The Reds go into the derby as 7/2 underdogs, while the draw’s available at 14/5.
Both teams to score at 7/10
There’s a reason why the odds on this aren’t very long. Both teams are susceptible at the back and full of threat up front, despite Ibrahimovic’s absence for United.
Sane or Rashford to score in 1-1 draw at 35/1
Leroy Sane and Marcus Rashford are similar with their pace, directness and the excitement they bring to games. They’re also both priced the same to score their team’s goal in a 1-1 draw.
