Manchester City v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 28, 2018
Etihad Stadium - Premier League
After a lively encounter with Wolves last weekend, Manchester City can expect a very different sort of challenge against Newcastle United. The Magpies will do their best to contain City, and this game is likely to be an example of attack versus defence.
City have been hugely dominant over Newcastle in recent years, and are unbeaten against the Magpies in 21 meetings. The Blues have won 18 of those, including both of the fixtures last season. Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of the game at St James’ Park over the festive period, before City won 3-1 at the Etihad a few weeks later.
Kevin De Bruyne will be a big miss as City look to unpick Newcastle’s defence. He’s out for the next few months after picking up a knee injury in training, while receive goalkeeper is another absentee. Danilo is nearing a comeback, but won’t be ready in time for Saturday’s game.
Jonjo Shelvey is set to miss this game, after picking up an injury that kept him out of Newcastle’s game against Chelsea at the weekend. Jamaal Lascelles should be available to Rafael Benitez, which could be crucial to the visitors’ chances of keeping City at bay. Isaac Hayden is suspended following his sending off against Cardiff.
Manchester City v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
There’s only one outcome in this game on paper. City have reigned supreme over Newcastle since 2005, unbeaten against their North East rivals in 13 years. Wolves showed one way of playing against City last weekend, but Rafa Benitez will show another in this one.
It wasn’t exactly Hand of God territory, but City were unfortunate to concede from a clear Willy Boly handball on Saturday. The Blues almost snatched the win with a late Sergio Aguero free-kick, and if the Argentinian starts against Newcastle following his shisha-related indiscretion, he’s going to be a massive threat to the Magpies.
Aguero has scored 14 times in 11 appearance against Newcastle, and hit five against Newcastle a few years ago. His presence is one of the reasons City are huge favourites at 1/8, with the visitors priced at 28/1.
There doesn’t seem much hope for Newcastle, who put in a dogged defensive display against Chelsea in their last outing. They were undone by a late DeAndre Yedlin own goal, and they could have less of the ball than the 19% possession they registered against Maurizio Sarri’s side. If you think Newcastle can nick a draw though, that’s available at 41/4.
City to win to nil at 3/4
City have battered Newcastle a number of times in recent seasons, and the visitors are going to have few chances in front of goal.
Aguero to score first at 11/5
The Argentine has a stunning record against Newcastle and is the favourite to strike first - providing he starts the game.
