Manchester City v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 16, 2018
Etihad Stadium - Premier League
Manchester City look to bounce back from their first Premier League loss of the season, facing a Newcastle side that haven't lost since the last time they faced the Citizens. It will be a real test of Guardiola's side's mentality, and they will be glad they are playing at home.
Manchester City and Newcastle met just three weeks ago, in a match that typified the discussion on sides playing for a draw against the Champions incumbent. On the day, City won just 1-0 thanks to a Raheem Sterling goal, despite taking 22 shots and 78% possession.
Fabian Delph will be sidelined, having picked up a knee injury against Liverpool, leaving Manchester City short at left-back, with Benjamin Mendy still out following cruciate ligament surgery. Gabriel Jesus is targeting a return around the end of the month, so will miss this clash, whilst Vincent Kompany is a doubt, having missed last week's match.
Florian Lejeune joins Jesus Gamez and Aleksander Mitrovic in the treatment room for Newcastle, with Chancel Mbemba and second top-scorer Dwight Gayle requiring late fitness tests.
Manchester City v Newcastle Betting Tips and Previews
Pep Guardiola has a big task ahead of him, raising his players heads after their hopes of matching Arsenal's Invincibles' unbeaten season were dashed last weekend. Of course, Manchester City have had a fantastic season, and are almost guaranteed to win the Premier League, yet the extra motivation will doubtless have given the players that much more to fight for.
Against Liverpool, City's defensive frailties were exposed and it became clear that the way to defeat the league leaders was to beat them at their own game, all out attack. However, few teams have the attacking prowess of Jurgen Klopp's side, and Rafa Benitez has a difficult tactical decision of his own: stick with the defensive approach that narrowly lost against his opposition last month, or copy his former side and goal in all guns blazing.
Of course, trying to match City's attack will be hard, given that Newcastle have scored less than one third of their goal tally this season. Making matters worse, Dwight Gayle, who started the Magpies last game up-front is an injury doubt. The club's top scorer, Joselu, who is 4/1 to score on Saturday, has just four goals to his name this season, and will face off against the likes of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, who are 2/5 and 3/4 to score respectively.
It may well be a case that Benitez decides to shut up shop and hope that City are off their game, although, its just as likely that Guardiola will have fired his team up, and they will be out looking for revenge.
Manchester City to win 3-0 at 7/1
The Citizens have a point to prove, will be playing to a home crowd and Newcastle surely can't hold out as they did to only concede one goal the last time the teams met.
David Silva to score anytime at 23/10
The midfielder was rested against Liverpool and is a wizard at unlocking defences.
