Manchester City v Rotherham Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 04, 2019
Etihad Stadium - FA Cup
Premier League champions Manchester City play host to Rotherham United of the Championship in the third round of the FA Cup. The Millers are only three points clear of the relegation zone in the second tier, and this should be a formality for Pep Guardiola’s side.
These two clubs have only ever faced each other 10 times, with City winning seven of those and drawing three. The teams last met in 2002, when they were both in the old Division One together. City won at home and drew away that year. The Blues put Rotherham out of last year’s Football League Trophy via a penalty shootout, but that was the Premier League outfit’s under 21s side.
We can expect sweeping changes to City’s line-up after their epic contest with Liverpool on Thursday night. Guardiola will surely rest the likes of Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva, while Vincent Kompany and Aymeric Laporte are both injury doubts after midweek. Kevin De Bruyne could come into the side, along with the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden.
Millers boss Paul Warne will be without Darren Potter and Kyle Vassell, a distant relation to ex-City man Darius. Richard Towell is banned after getting sent off against Bristol City, but Billy Jones comes back into the team after a suspension of his own.
Manchester City v Rotherham Preview and Predictions
After lighting the blue touch paper in the Premier League title race on Thursday night, it’s a very different challenge for Manchester City as they welcome struggling Championship side Rotherham to the Etihad this weekend. The Millers are being tipped for an immediate return to the third tier of English football, while City are looking to win the FA Cup for the first time in eight years.
The Blues put in a wonderful performance against Liverpool in midweek, and Guardiola will surely rest some legs after the effort his players expended in that game. Even so, City’s squad is packed with quality, and any second string players who come in will be expected to get the job done.
It’s almost impossible to see anything other than a home win here, and the bookmakers certainly agree. City are 1/12 for the win, as they look to make it three wins on the spin, following three defeats in their previous four Premier League fixtures.
Rotherham have a huge price of 40/1, which puts their chances into context. The Millers might see a glimmer of hope in that City have only won three of their last seven FA Cup games against teams from a lower division. A draw would be an incredible achievement for the visitors, and it’s priced at 14/1.
City to win to nil at 4/6
This bet looks as good a way as any to get some more value out of the home win, which is almost unbackable in the outright market.
Jesus to score first at 3/1
After a difficult summer and slow start to the season, the Brazilian looks like he’s on the way back to form and should get a start on Sunday.
