Manchester City v Shakhtar Donetsk Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 26, 2017
Etihad Stadium - Champions League
It’s the Ukrainian champions up next for Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring Manchester City, as Shakhtar Donetsk visit the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League. It’s a test for the Citizens, but after their stunning recent form, there could be another cricket score on the cards.
This will be the first time the two teams meet, so there’s nothing to go on in terms of the history of this fixture. However, Shakhtar lost all three of their away games in the Champions League two years ago so the omens aren’t great for Paulo Fonseca’s side.
Question marks remain over Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, with the Belgian defender still recovering from a calf problem. Ilkay Gundogan missed the weekend’s game against Crystal Palace after picking up a knock on his return in the League Cup last week, and he’s a doubt for this one too. Benjamin Mendy meanwhile will hope to be fit after picking up a knock and going off after half an hour on Saturday.
Maksym Malyshev is the only absentee for Shakhtar, after the defensive midfielder had an operation on his knee earlier this month. Darijo Srna will captain the visitors, who have a contingent of Brazilian stars including Bernard, Taison, Fred and Dentinho.
Manchester City v Shakhtar Donetsk Preview and Predictions
After both sides won their opening fixtures, this game could be a big one in deciding the outcome of Group F. It’s a tough ask for Shakhtar considering how well City are playing at the moment, which is one of the reasons why they’re such heavy favourites with the bookmakers.
The Blues have been blowing away teams in recent weeks, scoring 22 goals in their last five games. There’s never usually much to worry about going forward, with City’s problems often coming at the back. However they’ve only conceded a single goal in their fine run, despite the absence of captain Kompany.
It’s all looking very encouraging at the Etihad, as City become more and more like a Guardiola team each week. After beating Napoli in their first Group F game, Shakhtar shouldn’t be a pushover though and the likes of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne will need to be on good form to see off the Ukrainian champions.
There’s no getting away from the fact that City are huge favourites though, priced at 2/9 in the betting. Shakhtar are available as long as 16/1, while the draw’s 7/1.

Shakhtar to win and both teams to score at 20/1
It’s hard to see the visitors keeping a clean sheet, even if they manage to pick up the win.
