Manchester City vs West Brom Predictions, Betting Tips & Previews
May 16, 2017
Tuesday 16 May – Etihad Stadium – Premier League
Manchester City are looking to secure a top four Premier League finish with victory against a badly out of form West Brom side. The Baggies have been abject since the turn of the new year, and are fortunate that their strong start prevented their participation in a relegation scrap.
West Brom are Manchester City’s metaphoric whipping boys, failing to beat the Citizens in their last 14 league attempts, losing 13. Guardiola’s men won 4-0 away to the Baggies this season, so confidence in getting a result will be sky high.
Ilkay Gundogan and Claudio Bravo will both be missing for the home side. However, as the former is a long term absentee and the latter has had to share the number one spot with Willy Caballero, their effect on Pep Guardiola’s starting XI is minimal. The former Barcelona coach seems to have settled on a pressing 4-1-4-1 shape, although he has recently experimented with three at the back.
West Brom also have few injury concerns, and will only be without Gareth Macaulay and Sam Field. Northern Ireland international Macaulay is the Baggies second top scorer this season with eight goals though, so his presence will be missed. The impressive Matt Philipps will return from a thigh injury, although he may not be risked from the start.
Manchester City vs West Brom Preview and Predictions
It seemed all but lost at one point, but Guardiola has turned City’s season around. They now sit in a position of strength in the fight for Champions League qualification. Last week’s win against a revitalised Leicester City came just after the 5-0 destruction of Crystal Palace, so it’s no surprise to see them as heavy 2/11 favourites.
The Baggies meanwhile are at 20/1. Although a massive profit could be made, betting on the away side might be best avoided. Tony Pulis’ men have failed to win their last seven. Their most recent victory was the memorable 3-1 demolition of Arsenal in mid-March.
Liverpool have recently turned the heat up on City and could still finish above them. With equally easy run-ins though, it’s hard to see that happening. The Manchester club do need to win each remaining game to maintain their slim advantage, and West Brom will struggle to stop City’s attacking onslaught.
Gabriel Jesus to score first at 13/5
Sergio Aguero is favourite to open the scoring, but it’s the teenage sensation who has captured the imagination this season. A winning goal and man of the match performance against the Foxes last week kept their slender lead in third place intact, so bet on the Brazilian to repeat the feat on Tuesday.
Manchester City to win by four or more goals at 12/5
Tony Pulis sides don’t defend well, in fact they just place as many bodies that they can in front of their goal in hope of blocking every shot. Guardiola’s game plan is all about slick movement, so the proverbial West Brom bus won’t stand a chance.
