Manchester United v Burton Albion Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 18, 2017
Old Trafford - Carabao Cup Third Round
Burton were a Conference team the last time they met Manchester United but shouldn’t have much trouble with their now-Championship opponents.
The clubs previously met in the FA Cup in the 2005-06 season when Burton sensationally held United to a goalless draw before being battered 5-0 in the replay at Old Trafford. On that occasion United took just seven minutes to go ahead but back then Burton were a Conference side and since then they have come further than United.
Former Liverpool man Stephen Warnock will need all his experience to help guide his Burton teammates through a night on the big stage and will be feeling good after a rare goal in the weekend’s excellent win over Fulham. Manager Nigel Clough will be feeling good after seeing his side pick up three points after focusing on Fulham rather than having one eye on Old Trafford.
With Champions League games to contend with as well as the Premier League United are expected to make a lot of changes. Such moves haven’t always worked out for United, including the last time they met Burton. Michael Carrick hasn’t had a game so far this season so don’t be surprised if he is selected to marshal a young side.
Manchester United v Burton Albion Preview and Predictions
United’s 2-2 draw at Stoke was the only one of their last six they haven’t won with 17 goals scored and none conceded in the other five. At their own level Burton have been doing well with three wins and two draws from their last six fixtures. What should worry them is that when they were away to high-flying Leeds United earlier in the month they were hammered 5-0.
United are 1/9 to win with 45/1 offered on Burton providing a shock. The odds on the game being drawn are 16/1.
Marcus Rashford is 57/17 to open the scoring with Anthony Martial 39/10. Romelu Lukaku is 9/4 but surely Jose Mourinho will give his centre-forward the night off against Championship opposition in the Carabao Cup? One man who might well be worth a punt is Marouane Fellaini who is 8/1 for the first goal and just the sort of man whose physical power might be a telling influence.
For Clough’s Burton experienced forward Marvin Sordell is a tempting 24/1 for the first goal. Should he score you would still expect the home side to win comfortably but if United start sloppily through complacency Burton could shock them.
Manchester United to win 4-0 at 7/1
United have won three of their six games by this scoreline and even a much changed line-up will have the potential to rack up another big win.
Manchester United to win 2-0 at 15/2
Burton will raise their game, United will have fringe players playing and with no goal-difference advantage to improve 2-0 will comfortably do the job.
