Manchester United v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
April 25, 2019
Old Trafford - Premier League
Three points separate fourth-placed Chelsea and Manchester United in sixth as the teams head into this crush clash at Old Trafford on Sunday. They may not have shown it in recent weeks, but both sides are aiming to finish in the top four.
Ross Barkley scored a 96th-minute equaliser for Chelsea in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in the first meeting between the teams this season. United returned to west London in the FA Cup and won 2-0 in February, having lost to the Blues in last year’s cup final. Before that, there were five successive home wins in this fixture.
Ander Herrera, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly are all injury doubts for United, and surely three players who are fighting for their futures at Old Trafford. The same could be said of Romelu Lukaku, who could come into the team against his former club. Antonio Valencia is injured, and another likely to leave the club this summer.
Chelsea meanwhile are fighting to ensure Callum Hudson-Odoi remains part of their future, but the exciting prospect won’t play again this season after rupturing his Achilles on Monday. Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso could be fit, while N'Golo Kante should be okay after a knock to the ribs.
Manchester United v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
With the season reaching its climax, Sunday’s encounter between United and Chelsea could go a long way to deciding if one of these teams will play in next season’s Champions League. It’s the top-four race that no one seems to want to win, but a victory for the visitors would give them every chance of returning to Europe’s top table next term.
The Blues may have slipped up in drawing 2-2 at home to Burnley on Monday, but they’re in the better form. They’ve only lost two of their last 13 fixtures in all competitions, winning nine. United meanwhile are on a dreadful run, having lost seven of their last nine games.
The Reds were soundly beaten by Everton last weekend, but put in a better performance in the Manchester derby on Wednesday night. They still lost 2-0 to their local rivals though, leaving them needing not only a victory this weekend, but also Chelsea and Arsenal to slip up again in their remaining matches.
The Blues have been poor travellers in recent months, which should give United some encouragement. They’ve lost five of their last seven on the road, failing to score on each occasion. The visitors are 7/4 to put that right with a win on Sunday, while United are only slight favourites at 17/10, with the draw at 5/2.
United to win to nil at 4/1
Chelsea have been poor on the road recently, while their defeat to City was only United’s second on home soil this season, and first since August. The away team are the same price for the same bet if you fancy United’s rotten run to continue.
Lukaku to score first at 6/1
The Belgian striker saw a couple of opportunities flash his way after coming on as a late substitute against City, and he’ll be desperate to make his mark if he gets the nod to start this one.
