Manchester United v Manchester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
April 22, 2019
Old Trafford - Premier League
This Manchester derby is huge for both United and City, with the hosts gunning for the top four and the visitors for the title. The Reds are looking to bounce back from a humiliating defeat at the weekend, while the Blues will go back above Liverpool with a win.
City have won three of the last five Premier League meetings between the sides, including a 3-1 success at the Etihad earlier this season. United stopped City winning the league with a 3-2 away win last term, while their last league victory over the Blues at Old Trafford was almost exactly four years ago.
United could have some reinforcements back on Wednesday, which they clearly need considering their current run. Ander Herrera is close to a return, while Eric Bailly is also back in training. Luke Shaw is available after a two-match ban for picking up 10 yellow cards, but Antonio Valencia is injured. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doesn’t have too many options for shaking things up in a bid to stop the rot though.
City suffered a major setback on Saturday when Kevin De Bruyne pulled up with a hamstring injury in their win against Tottenham. The Belgian has been excellent in recent weeks, and he’ll be a big miss. It remains to be seen whether he’s done for the season, but the midfielder is City’s only injury concern aside from reserve goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
Manchester United v Manchester City Preview and Predictions
Even if United are in awful form, this is far from the ideal fixture for City to have as their game in hand. The Blues should walk this game on paper, but funny things can happen in derbies. There wouldn’t be anything humorous about dropping points for either team though.
United’s run of six defeats in eight games has seen their season collapse after so much promise under Solskjaer. Saturday’s 4-0 humbling at Everton was an indication of how far they have to come to challenge for the title, while even their place in the top four is looking unlikely now.
Failing to win this game could prove terminal for the Reds’ place in next season’s Champions League, while anything other than three points would take City’s title defence out of their own hands. The Blues start this game two points behind Liverpool, who have a straightforward run of games to finish the season.
Despite their heartbreaking Champions League exit at the hands of Tottenham, City have been peerless in the league for months. They’ve won 14 of their last 15 Premier League matches, including each of the last 10. The visitors are 4/9 to make it 11 victories on the bounce, while United are 13/2 and the draw is 4/1.
Man City to win to nil at 15/8
United have failed to score in a number of big home games this season, notably against Liverpool, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain under Solskjaer, and City are the clear favourites to get the win.
Raheem Sterling to score first at 9/2
The English forward has been superb recently and is on 23 goals for the season - 17 of those have come in the Premier League, just two fewer than main striker Sergio Aguero.
