Maribor v Liverpool Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 16, 2017
Stadion Ljudski Vrt - Champions League
Liverpool travel to Slovenia to face Maribor having failed to win either of their Champions League games so far, but they are hot favourites to win here. Even though they should have enough to pick up the three points on Tuesday, Jurgen Klopp’s side must stop missing so many chances.
The clubs have never met before in any competition, but the chance to welcome the five times European champions to Slovenia will see Maribor raise their game and try to claim a prized scalp.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Daniel Sturridge are expected to be given game time in the starting lineup. Along with Dominic Solanke. Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne continue to see the treatment room rather than the dressing room. Although they need a win Jurgen Klopp’s side are likely to have a good few squad members involved, although a nucleus of main men such as the endlessly industrious Jordan Henderson will probably be called upon once again.
Maribor pin a lot of their hopes on veteran Brazilian striker Tavares. Now in his 11th season for the club, he's scored 124 league goals for the Violets but hasn’t netted since a Champions League goal against Hapoel 10 games ago. Four of his six strikes this season have come in the early stages of the Champions League.
Maribor v Liverpool Preview and Predictions
At times Liverpool have looked brilliant this season, playing slick and quick purposeful football. Often though they're a team who miss chances galore. The Reds are 1/5 on to win with Maribor 18/1, and the draw priced at 36/5.
Liverpool’s terrible finishing has seen them draw their last three games, starting with a 1-1 draw at Spartak Moscow in the Champions League. This was followed by another 1-1 at Newcastle and then a failure to seriously look like scoring against Manchester United. However with Spurs up next on Liverpool’s fixture list, don’t be surprised if some of the Anfield outfit's biggest stars don’t even travel.
In their domestic league Maribor have won three and drawn one of their last four, but were outclassed in losing 3-0 at Sevilla in the Champions League. Damjan Bohar was on the mark against Spartak Moscow and as three of his four goals this season have come in the last eight minutes, he could be a good bet for the last goal.
Five of top scorer Jasmin Mesanovic’s six goals have come in the last eight games, including two braces, but he hasn’t scored in Maribor’s six Champions League games. Tavares has a good record in the Champions League however. Now 33, he often comes off the bench and will be a goal threat on Tuesday if he gets a run out.
Daniel Sturridge to score first at 18/5
Sturridge is expected to start, has a point to prove and is a natural finisher. He may prove to be the cure to Liverpool’s problem of missing chances.
Liverpool to win 2-0 at 11/2
Even if not at full strength Liverpool should have too much for Maribor. Playing in Slovenia means they'll be under a little less pressure than they’ve been dealing with at home.
