Middlesbrough v Southampton Predictions, Betting Tips & Previews
May 09, 2017
Saturday May 13 – Riverside Stadium – Premier League
Already relegated Middlesbrough welcome mid table Southampton on Saturday, a real ‘nothing to play for’ battle in the North East.
Visitors Southampton have the slight edge in previous meetings between these two sides, winning three out of five off their last five Premier League match ups, compared to just one for the hosts.
Middlesbrough boss Steve Agnew will assess the fitness of three first team players before picking his starting XI for this game. Daniel Ayala, Gaston Ramirez and Victor Valdes are struggling with ankle, pelvic and rib injuries respectively and will all be given a chance to prove their fitness.
Brad Guzan, Calum Chambers and Adam Forshaw are all on standby to start, should any of them miss out.
Southampton have no fresh injury issues ahead of their trip up north, despite Charlie Austin’s return to training. The former QPR man is still some way short of match fitness and will not be risked.
Virgil van Dijk, Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy are all sideline until next season through injury.
Middlesbrough v Southampton Preview and Predictions
Middlesbrough have already fallen through the relegation trap door, and their recent form demonstrates why. Just one Premier League win since December 2016 essentially sealed their fate, and defeat to Chelsea on MOnday night confirmed it.
In front of their home crowd on Saturday they will want to put on a display, but look short of the required quality to beat Southampton.
With pride motivating Middlesbrough, and the existing attacking intent that Southampton possess, a draw looks a likely option in this one, priced at 5/2.
Given the mood at the Riverside, following their eventual relegation, it is unlikely to be a classic game, and a under 2.5 bet is a tempting one, priced at 10/11.
A 1-1 draw at 6/1
Neither side have anything left to play for, with their fates decided as relegation and mid table safety before Saturday’s meeting. Boro will be stubborn defensively, whilst maintaining a threat from set pieces. Southampton have threat of Manolo Gabbiadini, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse going forward that should cause concern for Agnew’s team.
Alvaro Negredo to score anytime at 2/1
Former Manchester City striker Negredo has been ‘Boro’s leading light in attack this season, scoring 9 times in the Premier League. He will be a huge threat aerially for the hosts, against a Southampton defence lacking in height.
