Newcastle United v Crystal Palace Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 17, 2017
St James’ Park - Premier League
After ending their goals and points drought with a stunning win over Chelsea, can Palace clip the Magpies' wings by earning another result against Newcastle?
Newcastle have an excellent record against Crystal Palace. The Magpies have won this fixture 25 times to Palace’s nine, with seven draws. There have been four meetings at St James’ in the last decade with Newcastle winning three of them without conceding a goal, while there was also a 3-3 draw.
Newcastle have an ongoing problem with last season’s top scorer Dwight Gayle, who continues to struggle with a calf injury. They're also without defenders Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett who have knee and hamstring injuries.
Palace had veteran Julian Speroni in goal for the first time in 18 months against Chelsea, as regular first choice Wayne Hennessy is out with a calf strain. At the other end of the pitch Palace are still without Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham, but hope to have Ruben Loftus-Cheek available for this one.
Newcastle United v Crystal Palace Preview and Predictions
After the season’s shock result so far when Palace beat Chelsea, Roy Hodgson’s side go to Tyneside needing to prove their win wasn’t a flash in the pan. Equally, Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle need to live up to their billing of having settled well into the Premier League.
The Magpies have only taken two points from their last three games having lost their first three. In between they had a run of three wins, which is the kind of form the home faithful are after. At St James' Newcastle are unbeaten in three games, and will be looking for nothing less than all three points against bottom of the table Palace.
The hosts are 13/12 to win with Palace priced at 10/3 and the draw available at 11/4. Ayoze Perez got his first goal of the season against Southampton at the weekend and could be set for a scoring burst. He's 15/2 for the opening goal.
Matt Richie always looks capable of a goal, not least from a set piece, while defender Jamaal Lascelles has shown his prowess from corners more than once this season. Both are generously priced to score at any time with Richie at 29/10 and Lascelles 15/2.
Wilfried Zaha to score first at 19/2
Excellent odds for Zaha to open the scoring, after he scored a cracker on his return last weekend. Newcastle have various candidates for the first goal but Zaha poses Palace’s main goal threat in the absence of strikers like Benteke.
Newcastle to win 2-1 at 14/1
The Magpies are favourites at home, but perhaps not strong enough at the back to keep a clean sheet against a side who hadn’t scored until last week.
