Newcastle United v Watford Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 22, 2019
St James’ Park - FA Cup
Two Premier League clubs collide in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend, as Newcastle host Watford at St James’ Park on Saturday. The Magpies are looking to keep up their momentum, but the Hornets are having a good season.
Newcastle beat Watford 1-0 at St James’ earlier this season, and almost repeated the trick in the return last month. However, Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a late equaliser for the Hornets as the game ended 1-1. Watford won five in a row before those two fixtures, including a 3-0 victory on Tyneside last term.
Rafa Benitez is likely to shuffle his pack once again, as he usually does in the cup competitions. That could mean top scorer Salomon Rondon drops out, with Joselu coming into to replace him. Mohamed Diame, Jonjo Shelvey, Paul Dummett, Federico Fernandez and Kenedy are all injury concerns for the Magpies boss.
The visitors also have some injury worries coming into this game, including defender Sebastian Prodl. Will Hughes, Doucoure and Craig Cathcart are all doubts too. Javi Gracia made sweeping changes in the last round at lower-league minnows Woking - surely he’ll name a stronger line-up here.
Newcastle United v Watford Preview and Predictions
This game would be a lot easier to call if we knew how each manager was thinking ahead of the tie. If they both name their strongest teams, we’d probably be in for another tight game between these sides, with Newcastle holding the upper hand this season.
We can’t be sure how the teams will line up though, which makes things a little more difficult. It could create a bit of confusion though between players who don’t usually feature alongside each other, which may lead to more goals than the three we’ve seen in their two league meetings this term.
Newcastle are also rattling the goals in at a much higher rate right now, even if it’s only over the last week. They’ve scored seven in two games against Blackburn and Cardiff, and Benitez’s side should be on a high after recording a vital victory over their relegation rivals last time out.
Despite that, the hosts start as the underdogs in the betting, priced at 2/1. Watford are 11/8, and their price is certainly influenced by their lofty league position. The Hornets are riding high in seventh place at the moment. Given Newcastle’s recent form but Watford’s performances throughout the season, a draw and a replay could be on the cards here, and that’s available at 12/5.
Score draw at 18/5
The teams drew 1-1 the last time they met, and the same result could be worth a look here. With that in mind, a 1-1 draw is priced at 23/4.
Watford to win and BTTS at 4/1
Or back the visitors to progress with this bet. The Hornets have been excellent so far this season, and Newcastle could ring the changes in the face of their relegation fight.
