Newcastle v Manchester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 25, 2017
St James’ Park - Premier League
Next up for record-breaking Manchester City is a trip to the North East to face Newcastle, who increasingly find themselves in trouble. Rafa Benitez’s side are on an awful run and few would give them any hope of a result against City.
Newcastle have failed to beat City in their last 19 attempts in the Premier League, a run that spans over 12 years. This fixture ended in a 1-1 draw last season, ending a sequence of 12 consecutive City wins. The two before that game though were 6-1 and 5-0 victories for the Blues.
In light of their struggles in front of goal this season, plenty of Newcastle fans have wanted to see more of Aleksander Mitrovic. Rafa Benitez will hope to have the striker back from a lower back injury for this one, while Paul Dummett could return and Jonjo Shelvey is available after his suspension.
Sergio Aguero bagged five for City in that 6-1 demolition two years ago, and he should be fit to play despite battling a problem with fluid in his heel. Defenders Vincent Kompany, John Stones and Eliaquim Mangala could all be fit to rival each other for a starting spot alongside Nicholas Otamendi.
Newcastle v Manchester City Preview and Predictions
If current form and their recent history against Manchester City has anything to do with it, Newcastle don’t have a prayer of winning this game. The Premier League has an uncanny knack of throwing up surprises when we least expect them though, and the home fans will be hoping that this is another of those occasions.
The Magpies are without a win in nine games going into their Christmas double-header. Only bottom side Swansea have lost more games than Newcastle, whose joint top scorers in the Premier League are Dwight Gayle and Joselu on three. It’d be some achievement if Benitez can mastermind a victory over his fellow Spaniard in the opposite dugout, with the hosts priced at an incredible 14/1 in the betting.
No one has of course won more games than City this season, with the Blues’ strength going forward proving too much for everyone other team in the Premier League. Kevin De Bruyne has been majestic, while Guardiola will hope to have David Silva available after the playmaker’s absence for personal reasons. If City are in the groove this one will be a formality. They’re 2/7 for the win, while the draw’s 6/1.
Manchester City to win 3-0 at 15/2
The Blues are averaging around three goals a game this season. Their defence concedes less than one a game, while Newcastle have managed to score less than one a game.
Aguero to score two or more goals at 7/2
The Argentine striker has scored against Newcastle 11 times, and he’s 17/1 to bag a hat-trick in this one.
