Newcastle v Swansea City Betting Tips, Predictions and Previews
January 09, 2018
St James' Park - Premier League
Newcastle host Swansea on Saturday in the Premier League, in need of three points to reaffirm their status as a mid-table side. Swansea are rooted the bottom of the table, but know that a decent run of results could see they shoot up the table.
The home side will be buoyed by previous results, having beaten the Swans in the reverse fixture already this year, thanks to a goal from the in-form Jamaal Lascelles. The centre-back also scored in the fixture before that, two season ago, in a 3-0 victory to the Magpies, breaking a run of five matches without a win against Swansea on Tyneside.
Robb Elliot remains out for the Magpies, having picked up a thigh injury over the festive period, joining Chancel Mbemba, Florian Lejeune and Jesus Gamez. On the bright side for Rafa Benitez, Jamaal Lascelles knock against Luton was minor, and Aleksandar Mitrovic is nearly a return.
There are no new injury concerns for Carlos Carvalhal with Ki Sung-Yeung, Leon Britton both out on contention, despite recently returning to training.
Newcastle v Swansea Preview and Predictions
Despite sitting a lofty seven places above their competitors in the league, Newcastle are remarkably just six points ahead of Swansea, and only two clear from the relegation zone. Clearly, this match is far more important that it seems on paper.
After suffering a truly miserable spell in November and December, Rafa Benitez has revived his side in recent weeks, winning two and drawing one of his last five Premier League games. Furthermore, the two losses, against Manchester City and Arsenal, were both respectable 1-0 defeats, helping to raise moral at St James' Park.
The Magpies are unbeaten in 2018, having followed up an away win at Stoke by defeating Luton in the FA Cup last weekend. Ayoze Perez, recently returned to the team, netted in both fixtures, and is 2/1 to continue his scoring run against the Swans on Saturday.
Having won his first game in charge of Swansea, Carlos Carvalhal has overseen an, expected, loss to Tottenham, as well as a draw to Wolverhampton in the FA Cup. Neither result gives much of an indication of the clubs survival, but with the boss being promised "sardine" money, he should be able to bring in a number of player in the transfer window to help his cause.
The return to fitness of Wilfred Bony will also be key to the Swans survival, provided he can rediscover his form. With Tammy Abraham struggling to score, the Ivorian is likely to start against Newcastle, and is 16/5 to score anytime.
Carvalhal's men will be in for a tough game against the Magpies, but it is precisely this type of game that will likely decide the outcome of Swansea's season. Its 9/4 for them to pick up a point at St James' park, and doing so would be a great step towards survival.
Ayoze Perez to score and Newcastle to win at 5/1
The forward is on a roll in 2018, as is his team, and with the transfer window open Perez has the chance to change Benitez's mind if the manager was plotting a new striker's arrival.
Jamaal Lascelles to score anytime at 9/1
The Englishman has scored in his last two games against Swansea and is worth a punt to continue, particularly as a danger from corners and free kicks.
