Newcastle v Watford Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 27, 2019
St. James' Park - Premier League
Steve Bruce's Newcastle United side face Javi Gracia's bottom of the Premier League table Watford on Tyneside this weekend.
Newcastle were unbeaten against the Hornets in Premier League action last season, winning 1-0 at home and drawing 1-1 at Vicarage Road.
However, Javi Gracia's side did win 2-0 at St. James' Park in the FA Cup.
Newcastle are set to be without forward Allan Saint-Maximin, who suffered a recurrence of his thigh injury during their win over Tottenham last weekend. Christian Atsu replaced him in that game and is expected to start for the Magpies this weekend. However, Bruce is expected to be without DeAndre Yedlin, Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, Florian Lejeune and Jack Colback due to long term injury.
Ricardo Pereyra missed the Hornets defeat at home to West Ham due to a knee problem, and is expected to miss out this weekend. Gerard Deulofeu was taken off in that game, and faces a late fitness test, but Troy Deeney, Adalberto Penaranda and Tom Dele-Bashiru already ruled out.
Newcastle United v Watford Preview and Predictions
Newcastle picked up their first win of the season last weekend, with a battling 1-0 win away at Tottenham, following back-to-back defeats at home to Arsenal and away at Norwich City. Bruce's side showed their grit in North London, and he will be hoping that his players can take that form back to St. James' Park this weekend against the struggling Hornets.
Gracia's side have suffered a nightmare start to the 2019-20 season, with three Premier League defeats in a row, as they prepare to head to the North East this weekend. Losses to Brighton, Everton and West Ham have dented their confidence, and they already look up against it despite the early stage of the season - with a number of their rivals performing well.
Newcastle were a strong side at home last season, and Bruce knows that he needs to pick up points at St. James' Park this season and he will be hopeful of pushing Watford deeper into trouble - with a home win priced at 8/5.
The Magpies have been quiet in the goal scoring department so far this season, with two goals from their opening three games of the season, but they are without a home goal - and this is unlikely to be a high scoring game and an under 2.5 total goals bet priced at 8/11.
Newcastle to win 1-0 at 7/1
Bruce will not be expecting his side to blow sides away this season, and he is likely to base his attacking strategy on counter attacking sides using the pace of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron - and they will need narrow wins.
Joelinton to score first at 3/4
The Brazilian netted his first goal for Newcastle away at Tottenham, and he will be hopeful of continuing his run against a struggling Watford defence that has already conceded seven goals in three games.
