Newcastle v West Ham Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 22, 2017
St. James' Park - Premier League
Newcastle welcome West Ham to Tyneside on Saturday, in a battle between two of the Premier League's most out of form sides.
Recent meetings between these two show little to separate them in terms of form, with two wins apiece in their last four Premier League meetings. West Ham's last win at St. James' Park came back in 2012, thanks to Kevin Nolan goal in a 1-0 win, on his return to the North East.
Newcastle will be hoping that USA international DeAndre Yedlin can overcome a hamstring injury in time for Saturday's game, he has returned to training, but manager Rafa Benitez must make a decision on his match fitness.
Fellow defender Florian Lejeune is out with an ankle injury that suffered in the opening day defeat to Tottenham, and the summer signing is expected to be out of action until September.
Captain Jonjo Shelvey serves the second game of a three math ban for a red card in the Tottenham game.
West Ham are also missing a few key names ahead of their trip north, with key defender Winston Reid out for a month with a calf strain.
Manuel Lanzini and Cheikhou Kouyate are both back in training for the Hammers following knee injuries, however neither player is expected to be fit in time for the weekend.
Former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll is also back in training after a groin injury, but he too is unlikely to be match fit in time to face his former employers on Saturday.
Newcastle v West Ham Preview and Predictions
Both sides have endured a miserable start to the 2017-18 Premier League season, with Newcastle losing at home to Tottenham and away at fellow new boys Huddersfield in their first two games. Slaven Bilic's West Ham were soundly beaten 4-0 by Manchester United on the opening day, before a late 3-2 defeat to Southampton last weekend.
The power of St. James' Park did not work for Newcastle against Tottenham, but their second home game could be a different story against a poor West Ham team on Saturday. Home advantage could be key in securing the Magpies a home win, with a victory for Benitez's side priced at 13/10.
It is unlikely to be a classic between two sides lacking in confidence, but a narrow win for Newcastle looks a good option, and an under 2.5 goals bet is priced at 5/6.
Newcastle to win 1-0 at 8/1
Benitez will be desperate to get a vital win under his belt, to dispel any chance of unrest at a club famous for it, and get their season off to a delayed start on Saturday.
Dwight Gayle to score first at 5/1
Gayle's goals fired the Magpies to the Championship title last season, and promotion back to the top flight, netting 26 goals in the league last season. His pace and tenactity against defenders could cause real problems for a West Ham back line shorn of Reid's leadership.
