Norway v Northern Ireland Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 06, 2017
Vilniaus LFF Stadium - World Cup Qualifying Group C
The final round of qualifying games sees Northern Ireland looking to win to increase their chances of being seeded in the World Cup play-offs but Norway having nothing left to play for.
Six of the eight previous meetings have been won by Norway but one of Northern Ireland’s two victories was the most recent game, won 2-0 in Belfast last March. The last seven meetings have been in Ireland, the one meeting in Norway being a 2-1 defeat for the Irish way back in 1974.
Veteran defender Aaron Hughes is ruled out of the Northern Ireland squad after picking up a calf injury. Hughes is his country’s most capped outfield player and his experience will be missed. Dunfermline’s Callum Morris was called up as Hughes’ replacement.
If other results between the Germany and Norway games went badly for Northern Ireland they could possibly require a point in Oslo but that is unlikely and Michael O’Neill could make changes to give other squad members a chance to impress.
Bournemouth’s Joshua King is the best known of Lars Lagerbeck’s squad who are captained by Fulham midfielder Stefan Johansen.
Norway v Northern Ireland Preview and Predictions
Norway are 6/4 to win while Northern Ireland are 19/10 with the odds on a draw being 9/4
Following their encouraging performances at the last European Championships these are great days for Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland who are guaranteed a Play-off place for the World Cup finals. Finishing ahead of the Czech Republic and Norway is a terrific achievement and Ireland will look to finish the group with a victory that can only increase their chances of success in the Play-offs when they come.
Norway will have enjoyed the boots of an 8-0 win on Thursday against San Marino but won’t enjoy the prospect of playing a dead rubber in front of their own supporters, knowing that defeat could see them finish second bottom, below even Azerbaijan. This could work against the Irish who might find Norway more up for the game than might be expected for a team in the doldrums despite losing just one of their last four fixtures.
Norway are 6/1 to win 1-0 and 9/1 to win 2-1 while the Irish can be backed at 7/1 to win 1-0 and 9/1 to win 2/1. Ireland’s current form and Norway’s home advantage make it unlikely there will be more than one goal separating the sides.
Norway to win 2-1 at 9/1
After a brilliant campaign it might be a step too far for the Irish while Norway will want to end on a high in front of their own fans.
Northern Ireland to win 2-1 at the same price of 9/1
The Irish have the incentive of boosting their chances of being seeded in the Play-offs and that could carry them to victory against a moderate Norway.
