Portland Timbers v LA Galaxy Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 02, 2017
Sunday 6 August – Providence Park – Major League Soccer
The LA Galaxy ended a run of five defeats with a 1-1 draw against Seattle Sounders last weekend and will look to build on their fine away record of five away wins this season at Portland Timbers, where they are unbeaten in their last three visits.
The sides have already met once this season, Timbers having already felled Galaxy by beating them 1-0 in Los Angeles back in March. Galaxy have won eight of the 18 meetings between these two, with Portland picking up five wins.
In-form Timbers Diego Valeri’s 11th goal and eighth assist of the season last week earned him a place in the MLS Team of the Week so the influential midfielder will be brimming with confidence, even more-so after being ranked as the third best player in the MLS by ESPN this week.
Two LA stars received a similar boost this week when Giovani dos Santos and centre back Jelle Van Damme were recognised by inclusion in the FIFA 17 Ultimate Team by EA Sports this week. Dos Santos and Galaxy are further boosted by the signing of Giovani’s brother Jonathan from Villareal who will look to sink the Timbers.
Portland Timbers v LA Galaxy Preview and Predictions
New LA Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid will look to this game to build on the ending of their recent run of defeats. Fourth placed Timbers are eight points ahead of ninth placed Galaxy in the Western Conference and with Galaxy seven points away from a Play-off position they need to get that winning feeling again at a venue which has been kind to them in recent seasons and are 11/2 to win.
Galaxy have been good on the road. Only two of their recent five game losing run were away, both of those defeats being by the odd goal. Prior to that bad run Galaxy had gone eight without defeat, winning four and drawing one of their five road games during that sequence.
Portland have been poor too lately with only one win in their last eight – and that away from home – although they have drawn four of those games and lost only one of the last six. The passionate Timbers Army haven’t seen a home win since early June. Timbers are 11/20 to defeat struggling Galaxy and 7/2 to continue their recent pattern of draws.
Fernando Adi to score the first goal at 10/3
Adi has 10 goals in 21 games and as the penalty taker the all-time Timbers top scorer has an added chance of opening the scoring for the fourth time this season.
The game to end as a draw at 7/2
Timbers have drawn a lot recently, Galaxy ended their losing streak with a draw last time out and the pair tied this fixture two seasons ago and at LA last season.
