Portland Timbers V Seattle Sounders Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
June 22, 2017
Sunday 25 June – Providence Park – Major League Soccer
The Portland Timbers will keep the pressure on Western Conference leaders Kansas if they can beat rivals Seattle Sounders at Providence Park. Ahead of their game at Minnesota United three days before facing the Sounders, the Timbers were just three points behind with a game in hand.
Portland have twice lost in Seattle in the last month but will be keen to face them in this return game. The last three visits by their west coast rivals have all been home wins, with Portland scoring three or four each time.
The Portland Timbers will be without former Aston Villa defender Liam Ridgewell who is recovering from a quad strain. Former Manchester United trainee Jack Barmby is also struggling with an ankle injury. Defender Chance Myers’ hamstring problem makes him doubtful too, but winger Darren Mattocks may be available.
Seattle have doubts over defenders Tony Alfaro (knee) and Grad Evans (calf), as well as forward Seyi Adekoya (ankle). Coach Brian Schmetzer must decide whether to save some of his key men from Thursday’s home Orlando game or risk them being not at their best when taking on the Timbers.
Portland Timbers v Seattle Sounders Preview and Predictions
Portland and Seattle have a fierce rivalry, and there’s no finer atmosphere in MLS than that cooked up by the Timbers Army. Having recently lost on their road trip to Seattle, the Timbers will be confident of setting the record straight and building on their good home record. Only Western Conference leaders Sporting Kansas City have won in Portland this season. The Timbers have won five and drawn the other two of their home fixtures, including the most recent two by comfortable 2-0 score-lines.
In contrast the Sounders have lost their last four away games, conceding 12 goals in the process. They’ll be wary of a trip to Portland, where they have a very poor record. The Timbers have twice been sleepless in Seattle recently after losing 2-1 in the US Open Cup and 1-0 in MLS, but will be favourites to come out on top at Providence Park. Portland are 49/50 to win, with Seattle 3/1 to pick up their first road trip victory since April’s 3-0 win at L.A. Galaxy.
The Portland Timbers are 5/2 to score three or more goals. They have won their last three home games against Seattle Sounders 4-2, 3-1 and 4-1, so this looks like a decent bet.
Portland to win by three goals at 10/1
Seattle have injury doubts and an important game three days before a fixture where they have conceded 11 goals in their last three visits.
Portland to win to nil at 11/4
The Timbers have kept clean sheets in their last two home games, while the Sounders have scored just once in their last three away fixtures.
