Portland Timbers v Real Salt Lake Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
July 17, 2017
Thursday July 20 – Providence Park – Major League Soccer
Portland host Real Salt Lake on Thursday, with points sides struggling for points and confidence following a poor run of recent results.
Portland have a slight edge in recent meetings between these two sides, three of the last four meetings have ended in a draw. However the most recent match up, back in September 2016, Portland broke the drawing pattern with a 1-0 home win.
Portland have an ever increasing injury list, a factor that has played a huge role in their poor recent form, and it shows little signs of easing before Thursday’s game.
Defender Gbenga Arokoyo is out for the rest of the season after tearing his achilles tendon, along with fellow defender Amobi Okugo, who has a knee injury.
Former English Football League pair Jack Barmby and Liam Ridgewell are both out of this game, with ankle and thigh injuries respectively.
Midfielder Diego Chara is ruled out with a hamstring strain, but defender Chance Myers could return from his own hamstring problem.
Real Salt Lake have their own injury concerns, with Chad Barrett and Jordan Allen both out for the rest of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery.
Midfielder Omar Holness is still sidelined with a knee injury, and is not expected to be back in action for another two weeks.
However fellow midfielder Stephen ‘Sunny’ Sunday is back in training after a hamstring strain, and will play if he can face a fitness test.
Portland Timbers v Real Salt Lake Previews and Predictions
Portland are in the middle of a woeful run of form, drawing their last three games, and without a in in their last five games. A run of form that has almost derailed their season, only really being saved by the even worse form of others.
Real Salt Lake are also struggling for form, losing four of their last six games, however unlike their hosts on Thursday, they have picked up two wins during that run of games.
Both sides are in poor form, but Real Salt Lake should have enough to edge it, with an away win priced at 9/2.
Real Salt Lake netted six in their last game, away against LA Galaxy, and Portland also carry a threat to almost guarantee goals, an over 2.5 goals bet is priced at 8/15.
Real Salt Lake to win 2-1 at 16/1
The visitors edge this one on current form, and Portland’s injury problems have them in free fall at the moment.
Both teams to score at 8/13
This is unlikely to be a classic encounter, but with home advantage on their side, Portland should have enough to at least get off the mark.
