Red Star Belgrade v Arsenal Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 16, 2017
Rajko Mitic Stadium - Europa League
Arsenal face a trip to Serbia on Thursday, as they look to put another disappointing Premier League result behind them against Red Star Belgrade. The late defeat against Watford was a bitter blow for Arsene Wenger, who must surely now see the importance of the Gunners’ Europa League campaign.
The only time the two teams have faced each other previously was in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup. After winning the first leg 1-0, Red Star progressed to the fourth round of the tournament by securing a 1-1 draw at Highbury thanks to a late Dusan Savic equaliser.
After racing into a 3-0 lead just after half time in their Super Liga game at the weekend, Red Star were able to rest key personnel like Nemanja Radonjic and Aleksandar Pesic. With six goals already this season, Serbian striker Pesic will pose a threat to the much-maligned Arsenal backline.
Shkodran Mustafi won’t be able to help out his fellow defenders in Belgrade, with the German international facing an extended spell on the sidelines. The visitors will also be without Calum Chambers, as well as Danny Welbeck after the injury prone forward pulled his hamstring in the defeat at Watford. Another man with injury troubles of his own, Jack Wilshere, should get another chance to impress from the start.
Red Star Belgrade v Arsenal Preview and Predictions
This could be the perfect game for Arsenal to bounce back from their weak surrender on Saturday, away from the pressure of the Emirates Stadium. However, for a team accused of lacking steel, there’s also the potential for another disheartening defeat.
After a disappointing draw at home against BATE Borisov in their opening Group H game, Red Star travelled to FC Koln in the last round of fixtures and came away with a 1-0 victory. It was an impressive result that’s put them right in the hunt for a spot in the knockout rounds. A win against their more illustrious Premier League opponents would be another huge step in the right direction, with the hosts priced at 18/5 in the betting.
The team that Wenger puts out could be a sign of how seriously the Gunners boss is taking the Europa League. Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey are expected to start after both players were given the weekend off following the heartache of missing out on the World Cup. If those two can channel their frustration in a positive way, then Arsenal will have more than enough to take the points. The bookmakers have them as favourites at 4/5, while the draw’s available at 14/5.
Sanchez to score in Arsenal win at 15/8
After so much turmoil with his future and Chile’s failure to reach the World Cup, back Sanchez to bounce back in style with a goal in a Gunners win.
Red Star to win 1-0 at 14/1
Or bet on the hosts to repeat the scoreline of almost 40 years ago as they condemn Wenger’s men to a second narrow defeat in a week.
