Roma v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
October 30, 2017
Stadio Olimpico - Champions League
After that thrilling 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge a couple of weeks ago, it’s the return fixture on Tuesday as Chelsea travel to Roma.
Chelsea raced into a 2-0 lead in the last game between the two teams, before ex-Manchester City duo Aleksander Kolarov and Edin Dzeko fired Roma into the lead. Eden Hazard rescued a point for the Blues in what was just the third meeting between the clubs. Prior to that game, each side had a win apiece.
Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco has a number of injury concerns ahead of this fixture. Patrik Schick, Gregoire Defrel, Emerson Palmieri, Kevin Strootman and Stephan El Shaarawy are all considered doubtful. The hosts hold the highest hopes for the latter two, Strootman and El Shaarawy.
Antonio Conte meanwhile hopes to have N’Golo Kante available again after a hamstring problem. If the French midfielder fails to make it then Cesc Fabregas or Danny Drinkwater will get the nod. One man certain to miss out is wing back Victor Moses, who has a hamstring injury of his own.
Roma v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
Despite the excitement these two teams served up in their previous meeting, both managers will look to tighten things up defensively for this return encounter. Chelsea can seal qualification to the Champions League knockout stages if results in Group C go their way, while Roma have Atletico Madrid breathing down their necks.
After a couple of early slip ups in Serie A, Roma have won all their last three games 1-0 since that draw at Stamford Bridge. With lots of stern competition domestically as the likes of Napoli, Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan sit above them in the league, Di Francesco and Roma could really use a strong Champions League campaign. Boasting the best defence in Serie A, expect the hosts to try and keep things tight at the back as they look to avoid what would be a disastrous defeat.
Chelsea have also won all three of their games since last playing Roma. Conte is in a similar position to Tuesday’s counterpart in that Manchester City look like running away with the Premier League, so the Italian boss needs to keep both the Stamford Bridge fans and owner happy with an encouraging European campaign.
The bookmakers can hardly separate these two in the betting. Roma are priced at 17/10, with Chelsea at 44/25 and the draw at 13/5.
The draw and both teams to score at 7/2
With this one proving difficult to call, bet on a similar result to the first game between the clubs as they play out another score draw.
Roma to win 1-0 at 11/1
Back the hosts to record their fourth successive 1-0 victory with this bet. It’s the same price if you think Chelsea will win by the same margin.
