San Jose Earthquakes v LA Galaxy Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
June 29, 2017
Sunday 2 July – Stanford Stadium – Major League Soccer
It’s fifth against sixth in the MLS Western Conference, as the San Jose Earthquakes host the LA Galaxy in the California Clasico. It’s the Earthquake’s annual game at the Stanford Stadium, as their local rivals visit for the all-Golden State affair.
San Jose have only beaten the LA Galaxy once in their last seven meetings, a 1-0 win at the Avaya Stadium almost two years ago. Most recently, the Galaxy won 4-2 when the teams met last month. Mexico forward Giovanni dos Santos scored twice that day.
Utility man Florian Jungwirth could return for the Earthquakes after injuring his ankle in the U.S. Open Cup win over the San Francisco Deltas. Andres Imperiale has impressed in his absence, with Jungwirth rated as 50/50 for Sunday’s clash. Quincy Amarikwa and Marvell Wynne have also returned to training, after respective knee and heart problems.
The LA Galaxy have been going through an injury nightmare in recent weeks. Facing a schedule of seven games in 17 days, the timing could hardly be worse. Defender Daniel Steres, goalkeeper Brian Rowe, and midfielders Jermaine Jones, Sebastian Lletget and Baggio Husidic have all been absent. Head coach Curt Onalfo will hope to start welcoming them back soon.
San Jose Earthquakes v LA Galaxy Preview and Predictions
A win for either team would really strengthen their position for an MLS Cup playoff place, as we head into the second half of the season. The LA Galaxy can move above the San Jose Earthquakes with a win, but also have a game in hand. The Cali Clasico promises to be quite the occasion in front of some 50,000 fans at the Stanford Stadium.
After retiring at the Earthquakes in 2011, Chris Leitch has made a decent start to his time as head coach. There are some good teams both above and below San Jose, but they have a great chance to qualify for the post season for the first time in five years. A win over the Galaxy would be a huge boost for their prospects. The Quakes start the game as favourites in the betting, priced at 10/11.
It’s been a transitional year for LA, after losing big players like Steven Gerrard and former captain Robbie Keane. New man Romain Alessandrini has supplied goals from midfield, but the return of dos Santos after Confederations Cup duty is crucial. The bookmakers have the visitors at 7/2 for this one, while the draw’s available at 13/5.
Both teams to score at 5/6
There’s usually goals between these two – 33 in the last 10 in fact – making this a good price for both teams to get on the scoresheet.
Romain Alessandrini to score and the LA Galaxy to win at 8/1
The big games are for the big players, and Frenchman Alessandrini is in good form. Meanwhile, Earthquake’s skipper Chris Wondolowski is priced at 11/5 to score in a home win.
