Shakhtar Donetsk v Manchester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 04, 2017
Metalist Stadium - Champions League
With progression to the knockout rounds already secured, Manchester City travel to the Ukraine to face second placed Shakhtar Donetsk. The hosts need a point to qualify, while the Blues have one eye on the Manchester derby coming up on Sunday.
The first Group F encounter between these two is the only time the teams have ever met before. Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling were enough for City to claim the three points at the Etihad Stadium back in September.
With City facing no threat to their place at the top of the group, Pep Guardiola could rest a few of his stars ahead of the trip to Old Trafford. The two goalscorers from the first game against Shakhtar would be prime candidates for a break, while Vincent Kompany could be handed a start. Injured duo John Stones and Benjamin Mendy both miss out.
If City captain Kompany does come into the side, he’ll have to deal with in-form Shakhtar striker Facundo Ferreyra. The Argentine has found the net 20 times in 26 appearances already this season, although the likes of Bernard and Marlos will also pose an attacking threat for the hosts.
Shakhtar Donetsk v Manchester City Preview and Predictions
The only thing Manchester City have riding on Wednesday evening’s game against Shakhtar Donetsk is their 100% Group F record. That and keeping their winning run going which now stretches to 20 games across all competitions. A point for the hosts meanwhile is enough to see them qualify for the Champions League knockout stage.
As much as Pep Guardiola will insist that his side will take each game as it comes, there’s no doubt that Sunday’s clash against Manchester United will be in the minds of everyone at City. With an eight point lead in the Premier League already, the Blues could virtually wrap up the title before Christmas with a victory against Jose Mourinho’s men.
Taking that into account, a lack of focus could offer Shakhtar the chance they need to claim the point required to qualify in second place. Napoli travel to Holland to play a Feyenoord team that’s yet to win a point, so the Ukrainian champions will be desperate for at least a draw. The lack of meaning for City means that Shakhtar start as favourites with the bookmakers. They’re priced at 13/10 in the betting, while the Citizens are available at 12/5 and the draw’s 5/2.
0-0 draw at 12/1
Back the hosts to get the point they need as they try to sit back and keep the clean sheet that guarantees them safe passage out of Group F.
City to win and both teams to score at 5/1
Or bet on the Blues to continue their winning run as Shakhtar sweat on the result from the night’s other game in Rotterdam.
