Southampton v Bournemouth Match Predictions and Betting Tips
March 28, 2017
Saturday 1 April – St Mary’s Stadium – Premier League
The Premier League returns this weekend with Saturday evening’s mouthwatering clash between Southampton and Bournemouth at St Mary’s. The south coast rivals are locked on 33 points as they compete for a top ten finish.
Southampton and Bournemouth have met seven times in the last seven years. The Saints have won six of these, including a 3-1 away victory in December. The game before though saw the Cherries emerge 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Steve Cook and Benik Afobe.
After naming the same starting lineup for three consecutive games, Claude Puel is likely to make some changes. In-form Manolo Gabbiadini misses out with a groin injury, while Maya Yoshida travelled over 14,000 miles on international duty. This could mean Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres makes his Saints debut after signing on a free transfer in February.
Josh King will spearhead Bournemouth’s attack after clocking up eight goals and an assist in his last eight games. At the other end Tyrone Mings continues to serve his suspension for stamping on Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Eddie Howe will be after strong leadership from captain Simon Francis, who looks to have overcome his injury problems.
Southampton v Bournemouth Preview and Predictions
Southampton and Bournemouth lie 10th and 11th respectively in the Premier League table coming into Saturday’s meeting. The Saints however have two games in hand, and a win over their rivals would go a long way towards securing local bragging rights.
Claude Puel’s team have their lowest points tally after 27 games since the 2012/13 season though, and need to find some form after just three wins in their last 10 games, along with the disappointment of losing the EFL Cup Final to Manchester United. They’ll start as 13/20 favourites to see off Bournemouth’s threat as they try to catch ninth-placed Stoke.
The Cherries players who were not on international duty enjoyed a warm weather training break in Dubai. Eddie Howe will hope this helps energise his charges as he looks for a third successive Premier League win. Bournemouth have never won away at Southampton, which contributes to a generous price of 5/1 for them to pull off a memorable derby win. If you’re struggling to pick a winner, you can get 3/1 for the draw.
Over 3.5 goals at 2/1
Bournemouth have conceded 21 in their last eight away games, so there could be plenty of goals in this one.
Southampton to miss a penalty at 14/1
Bournemouth games have seen the most missed penalties this season, with the Cherries 28/1 to miss one themselves.
