Southampton v Crystal Palace Betting Tips, Predictions and Previews
December 31, 2017
Saint Mary's Stadium - Premier League
Crystal Palace travel to Southampton on Tuesday, hoping to continue their push for survival that has seen them finally break out of the relegation zone. The Saints are going through a rough spell of form, but held off Manchester United in their last match which will have boosted confidence.
Southampton have generally had the beating of their weekend opponents since the sides' return to the Premier League, with Palace taking just two league wins from nine games. The Saints also won the reverse fixture, with an early Steven Davies goal proving enough on the day.
Ryan Bertrand should return in time for the match, however the Saints will be without Cedric Soares and Charlie Austin through injury and suspension respectively.
Chung-Long Lee is Roy Hodgson's only absentee, with the winger out since October.
Southampton v Crystal Palace Preview and Predictions
Southampton had a difficult December, facing Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal in the space of a few weeks. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Mauricio Pellegrino's men failed to pick up a win in the month, and will have been happy with two draws against the 'bigger' sides.
However, his side's inability to push on from draws to wins in less challenging games will be a concern to the manager. A large reason for this has been a lack of goalscoring instinct, with the team averaging just one goal per game, and will have to do without top-scoring Charlie Austin. They will rely heavily on Dustin Tadic, who is 3/1 to score anytime, to create, and finish, chances.
Palace, on the other hand, have had no problem scoring recently, and doubled their opponents goal/game tally for December. Having looked doomed to relegation early in the season, Roy Hodgson have completely turned his team around, to the point that they are confident enough to face Arsenal head on, and nearly match them.
Much of this can be attributed to the return from injury of Wilfred Zaha, who is the club's top scorer, despite being out for the first two months of the campaign. The tricky winger is 8/1 to score first on Tuesday. Given their confidence, and their opponents form, Palace should be on the front foot against Southampton, and fans can look forward to a lively game.
Crystal Palace to win at 16/5
Hodgson's men have form in their favour and Southampton's home form has hardly been good enough to offer much encouragement.
Wilfred Zaha to score anytime at 3/1
The winger has been in great form lately, and will be a constant threat. Southampton's van Dijk-less defence could struggle to handle the former Manchester United man.
