Southampton v Leicester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 21, 2018
St. Mary's Stadium - Premier League
Southampton host Leicester this weekend, with Mark Hughes's side looking get their first win of the 2018-19, against former manager Claude Puel's Foxes.
Leicester won 4-1 away at Southampton last season, followed by a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium. Southampton's last victory over Leicester came in the 2016-17 season, with a 3-0 home win.
Southampton will assess the fitness of two players ahead of this clash, with Jannik Vestergaard and Mohammed Elyounoussi struggling with illness and a hamstring problem respectively.
Charlie Austin is also a minor concern, and he could be replaced by either Manolo Gabbiandini or Shane Long in attack for the Saints.
Leicester will be without striker Jamie Vardy, as he serves the first game of a three match ban following his red card against Wolves last weekend. Fellow striker Shinji Okazaki is also set to miss this game, due to a injury, meaning Kelechi Iheanacho will lead the line for Puel's team.
Southampton v Leicester City Preview and Predictions
Southampton started the season with a 0-0 drawn against Burnley, before a 2-1 defeat to Everton last weekend. Leicester have fared slightly better, reacting to an opening day defeat to Manchester United, to beat Wolves 2-0 last time out.
However neither side have really set the league on fire with their early season form, and Hughes will be concerned about the confidence of his players against an experienced Leicester side. Puel also has unfinished business on the South Coast, following his unceremonious sacking in June 2017 and he will be sensing their weaknesses at the moment.
However a more conservative option for this one is a draw, priced at 11/5, which would ease some of the tension on Hughes, even if it is not the result that the home fans would want to see.
Despite their low key to the start to the season, Southampton do have a goal threat in their ranks, and they should get on the score sheet in front of their home fans. With that in mind, a BTTS bet comes in at 10/11 for this game.
A 2-2 draw at 18/1
Given the attack focus of both managers, and the pressure on Hughes to perform on home soil and Puel's desire to remind Southampton of his capabilities, this game is almost guaranteed to have goals in it. This game could actually turn into one of the most exciting games of the weekend, with both sides having plenty to prove.
Danny Ings to score first at 6/1
Ings sealed a loan move from Liverpool earlier this month, and he has already registered his first goal for the club - off the bench against Everton. Hughes is likely to start him this time around, regardless of Austin's fitness, and he will also have a point to prove following a frustrating two seasons.
