Southampton v Leicester City Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 11, 2017
St Mary’s Stadium - Premier League
Southampton welcome Leicester to St Mary’s on Wednesday evening, as the Saints look to close the gap to the Foxes who currently lie in eighth place. Both sides are in decent form at the moment so this one could be an entertaining encounter under the floodlights.
Home advantage seems to count for a lot between these two. Ten of the last 14 meetings have ended in a home win, with the away side failing to score in nine of those games. Last season, the teams played out a goalless draw at the King Power with Southampton winning the return 3-0.
Cedric Soares has returned to training after a hamstring problem but faces a late fitness test for this one. Southampton’s only other injury concern is Shane Long, who’s close to returning from a calf problem. With Charlie Austin in such great form, the Irishman could be in line for a spot on the bench.
Robert Huth continues to miss out for Leicester, although he could be available for selection over the Christmas period. He’ll have a tough job displacing either Harry Maguire or Wes Morgan in central defence though, with the pair having built a decent partnership of late.
Southampton v Leicester City Preview and Predictions
Despite their relative safety in mid-table, a couple of defeats for Southampton could plunge them into a relegation dogfight. Saints boss Pellegrino has his side playing plenty of nice football though, but Claude Puel has also had a superb impact at Leicester.
Olivier Giroud’s late equaliser was heartbreaking for Southampton after the impressive performance they put in. Despite their bad luck in a number of recent outings, the Saints have now won just one of their last seven Premier League games. They need to start being more clinical in front of goal, so it’s a timely boost that Austin’s returned to goalscoring form. The striker’s priced at 15/8 to score anytime.
Leicester meanwhile will be buoyed by their late victory at Newcastle, meaning they go in search of their fourth consecutive win on the south coast. After their disappointing start the Foxes are now in the hunt for European football. A big part of their resurgence has been the return to form of Riyad Mahrez, who’s once again looking like the player that inspired Leicester to the most unlikely of Premier League titles just 18 months ago.
Southampton will start this game as favourites in the betting though, priced at 23/20. You can back Leicester at 3/1, while the draw’s available at 23/10.
Southampton to win to nil at 27/10
This bet would’ve paid out in eight of the last 14 meetings between these two, although the Saints will have a tough job keeping Leicester at bay.
Mahrez to score and Leicester to win at 13/2
Back the Algerian forward to continue his impressive form with this bet. Charlie Austin’s priced at a tempting 11/4 to score in a home win.
