Southampton v Liverpool Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
April 01, 2019
St Mary's - Premier League
Liverpool are one step closer to the Premier League title but need to keep their mind on the task as they travel to Southampton on Friday. The Saints beat Brighton at the weekend to make it three wins in their last four, and improve their chances of survival.
Jurgen Klopp's side seriously outclassed their opponents in Liverpool's 3-0 win over Southampton earlier in the season. And own goal from Wesley Hoedt put the visitors at an early disadvantage, soon capitalised on by Joel Matip and Mohammed Salah.
Ralph Hassenhuttl has settled on his favoured starting XI and is unlikely to make many changes from last weekend's XI. Danny Ings is expected to start upfront with Nathan Redmond, whilst James Ward-Prowse and Stuart Armstrong will provide support.
Klopp, on the other hand, may be tempted to rotate his side, with Fabinho and Divok Origi both pushing for a start. Xherdan Shaqiri has featured little in the last few months, but could step in to hand a rest to Mohammed Salah or Roberto Firmino.
Southampton v Liverpool Previews and Predictions
Hassenhuttl's Southampton host Liverpool on Saturday, pitting the Saints manger against a man he is often compared with, Jurgen Klopp. Both coaches encourage a high-tempo, attacking style of football having honed their craft in the Bundesliga.
However, whereas the former Borussia Dortmund man has had several years, and a few hundred million to transition his side, his counterpart has had just three months. Even so, after several weeks acclimatisation, the Saints are showing signs of progress, an impressive performance against Manchester United preceding two successive wins. It may not be the unstoppable attacking play of Liverpool, but Hassenhuttl's influence has turned the clubs fortunes around.
On Wednesday, even with the new-found positivity, Southampton are likely to struggle. Their visitors have their own enthusiasm, having beaten a tough Tottenham side, and Liverpool are really starting to believe in their title prospects. With Champions League football yet to play, the next few weeks will be crucial for Klopp's side, and he will be certain not to let their standards drop.
The tactical match-up between the two sides could well be interesting, as Southampton have been pushing high up and hassling their opposition to great effect in recent weeks. Liverpool will not be used to that, and could well be shell-shocked early on, much as Manchester United were against the Saints. On the other hand, the blistering pace of Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane could exploit and gaps left in behind the defence. The two wingers are both 27/25 to score, despite failing to do so against Spurs.
Liverpool undoubtedly go into the game as overwhelming favourites, but will face a much more resilient Southampton side to the one they beat last season. Every point is crucial for the Saints in the run up to the end of the season, and they may feel they have a chance at claiming a scalp on Friday.
Ward-Prowse to score anytime at 21/4
Set pieces may be Southampton's best chance of a goal, and the free-kick maestro is on a roll.
Liverpool to win by two goals at 10/3
The Reds are unstoppable at the moment, and should be able to carve up the hosts' defence.
