Southampton v Liverpool Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
February 07, 2018
Saint Mary's Stadium - Premier League
Virgil Van Dijk faces his former club for the first time as Liverpool travel to Southampton for Sunday's Premier League action. The Saints are enjoying their best spell of the season, but face a highly motivated Liverpool team after their draw to Tottenham in the last round.
Southampton have had the better of Liverpool in recent years, and have lost just once since in their past six meetings. However, that loss came earlier this season in the reverse fixture in which a brace from Mo Salah and a strike from Philip Coutinho rounded off an emphatic performance from Liverpool.
Top scorer Charlie Austin remains sidelines with a hamstring injury, and was joined in the treatment room by fellow forward Manolo Gabbiadini, who missed Southampton's last game against West Brom. The Italian should recover in time for Sunday's fixture, but if not, new singing Guido Carrillo may get his second start for the side.
Former Saint, Adam Lallana has avoided a ban following a red card in an under-23s match, with Ragnar Klavan and Nathaniel Clyne both approaching returns to first team training following long spells out.
Southampton v Liverpool Preview and Predictions
With just one defeat since the turn of the year, it appears that Southampton have rediscovered the form necessary to ensure Premier League survival. After three consecutive league draws, Mauricio Pellegrino got a vital win against West Brom, with Mario Lemina putting in a particularly fine performance.
The Saints have struggled this season with goalscoring, and can't rely on their midfielders to win them games every match, however, if Carrillo can get of the mark soon, the form of the likes of Lemina and James Ward-Prowse will make Southampton hard to defend against. The former Monaco man is 12/5 to score anytime on Sunday.
Liverpool have had no such issue, and are second only to Manchester City in goalscoring terms. With Salah recently toppled from the summit of the topscorer charts, the Egyptian will be keen to improve his tally and is 11/10 to score against Southampton.
Manager Jurgen Klopp was furious following Liverpool's capitulation to Tottenham, due to a dubious penalty call, but will have been cheered up by Chelsea's defeat to Watford. With Manchester City nigh on uncatchable, the race for Champions League places is on, and Liverpool's draw saw them jump to third place, just five points off rivals Manchester United. A win at Southampton is no more than expected of Klopp's side who will try to transfer their disappointing last result into motivation this weekend.
Roberto Firmino to score first at 4/1
Klopp has been full of praise for the Brazilian this week, who goes into the match in fine form.
Liverpool to score in both halves 6/4
The Reds can't stop scoring at the moment, and if Southampton want to score they will have to sacrifice defensive stability.
