Southampton v Manchester United Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 21, 2017
St.Mary's Stadium - Premier League
Southampton welcome an in-form Manchester United to the south coast on Saturday, with Jose Mourinho's side looking to continue their unbeaten run.
Mourinho's side have a good record against the Saints in their recent meetings, winning three out of their last five meetings in all competitions, although they have not won at Southampton since a 3-2 victory in 2015.
Southampton held United to a goal less draw at home last season, and recorded their last win over the Red Devils in the 2015-16 season, with a 1-0 victory thanks to a late Charlie Austin goal.
Manchester United are still without key midfielder Paul Pogba, who will be sidelined for over a month with a hamstring injury- meaning a likely starting spot for either Ander Herrera or Marouane Fellaini in midfield.
Defender Luke Shaw is still some way from a first team return after suffering a succession of injuries during pre season, and he is joined by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rojo who are both out until the new year with long term knee injuries.
Southampton welcomed club captain Virgil van Dijk back into first team action last weekend in their win over Crystal Palace, it was the Dutchman's first appearance of the season following a summer long struggle with injury and a long running transfer saga with Liverpool- he is expected to start against United.
Striker Charlie Austin is facing a late fitness test on a foot injury, and if he is not passed fit, Manolo Gabbiadini or Shane Long could get the nod to start in attack.
Southampton v Manchester United Preview and Predictions
Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has enjoyed an inconsistent start to life in the Premier League, with wins over struggling Crystal Palace and West Ham, balanced against a loss to Watford and draws against Swansea and Huddersfield.
United on the other hand have been in ruthless mood, unbeaten in the Premier League so far, recording significant wins over Swansea, West Ham, Leicester City and Everton, as Mourinho's side have soared up to second in the table on goal difference.
The forward threat of Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata should be the decisive factor is this game and their goal threat indicates a United victory- with an away win priced at 4/5.
United have been in free scoring form in recent weeks, netting four against Everton and Swansea and twice against both Stoke City and Leicester City, so an over 2.5 goals bet looks to be a very strong option in their meeting with Southampton and is priced at 19/20.
United to win 3-1 at 16/1
With the forward power at their disposal, added to the greater security in defence from last season, United look primed to be real title challengers this season. Southampton have not started the season poorly, but they have hardly inspired their fans with flowing attacking football, and United should be too big a task for them to gain any points.
Romelu Lukaku to score first at 3/1
Belgian international Lukaku has hit the ground running at Old Trafford following his summer move from Everton, netting five goals in the Premier League so far this season. He has the power, the pace and the predatory eye for goal to give the Southampton defence nightmares on Saturday, and he could get on the score sheet more than once if he is in the mood.
