Southampton v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
October 11, 2017
St. Mary's Stadium - Premier League
Southampton welcome Rafa Benitez's Newcastle to the south coast in a battle between two of the Premier League's out-of-form sides on Sunday afternoon.
Southampton have a very good recent record against the Magpies, unbeaten in their last six meetings, and winning four of those games- including two 4-0 wins. A 2-2 draw at St James' Park in 2015 was Newcastle's last positive result against Southampton, their last victory came in 2013 and the last time they won on the south coast was back in 2004.
Rafa Benitez is waiting on the fitness tests of three players returning from injury before selecting his team to face Southampton, including captain Jonjo Shelvey. The former Liverpool and Charlton midfielder is suffering from an arm injury and has returned to full training, but O'Neill has to make a decision on how fit he is to play.
Fellow midfielder Matt Ritchie is also back in training following a thigh injury, and he is joined by Christian Atsu who has recovered from a calf problem, but both players are also a little short of match fitness.
Defender Paul Dummett will not be back in action until the end of November with a hamstring injury.
Striker Shane Long is ruled out with a hip injury, after he was left of the Republic of Ireland's game against Wales on Monday night, and he is likely to be replaced by Charlie Austin or Manolo Gabbiadini in attack.
Southampton v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
Both sides are in an inconsistent run of form in recent weeks, with hosts Southampton losing their last two Premier League games against Stoke City and Manchester United and Newcastle losing to Brighton and drawing with Liverpool.
the away form of Newcastle will be a concern for Benitez, picking up just one win on the road so far this season, but on the other hand Southampton have only picked up one victory on home soil this season.
With the recent runs of both teams, and their underwhelming starts to the season, this game looks to have a draw written all over it - and a stalemate is priced at 13/5.
Neither side has enjoyed a particularly fruitful spell in front of goal in recent weeks, Southampton have netted just two goals in their last five Premier League games, with Newcastle scoring four in their last three.
With this in mind, Sunday's game is unlikely to be a goal fest between two teams that are very short on both confidence and form, and an under 2.5 goals bet is priced at 4/5.
A 1-1 draw at 13/2
Both teams will be looking to not get beat, and that is set to be the priority on Sunday. Given their recent respective goal returns they will both offer a threat, but neither look in a position to go out and secure all three points in what will be a tight game.
Joselu to score first 13/2
Spanish striker Joselu looks to have finally settled at the club, after a number of high profile misses for the Magpies earlier this season. The former Stoke City forward has netted two goals in five Premier League starts in 2017-18, including the equaliser against Liverpool in their last game, and he will be looking to continue his positive recent run.
