Southampton v Stoke Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
February 27, 2018
St Mary’s - Premier League
Southampton host Stoke at St Mary’s on Saturday, with just a single point separating these two teams in the Premier League table. The threat of relegation is very real for both clubs, making this a massive game in the bid to avoid the drop.
A goal from Peter Crouch five minutes before full time secured a 2-1 win for Stoke at the Bet365 in September. Southampton have won just one of their last six against the Potters, with Crouch again the match winner in this fixture last season, scoring the only goal of the game on the hour.
Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino could have Shane Long and Steven Davis back in the team for this game after injury. Key duo Charlie Austin and Maya Yoshida are still out though, with both expected to return from respective thigh and knee problems at the end of March.
Recent star of this fixture Crouch could make his comeback from injury, which would be a major boost for Paul Lambert. Ryan Shawcross is also nearing a return from an ankle problem and has a chance of making this game, but Stephen Ireland misses out with a calf strain.
Southampton v Stoke Preview and Predictions
This match could go a long way in deciding the Premier League fate of these two sides. Southampton are only out of the relegation places thanks to their goal difference, but victory on Saturday could see them closer to the European places than bottom club West Brom.
The Saints’ win at the Hawthorns at the start of this month was crucial, as was Manolo Gabbiadini’s last minute equaliser at Burnley last weekend. Pellegrino’s side can’t seem to put a run together to haul themselves away from the bottom three, but a win in this fixture would be a massive result.
Three points would be just as important for Stoke’s season, after they were somewhat unfortunate to miss out on a win at Leicester on Saturday. Xherdan Shaqiri opened the scoring at the King Power, but despite the Swiss forward bagging in each of the Potters’ last three games, his team have only picked up two points.
Home advantage helps Southampton to start as favourites in this one, and they’re priced at 7/9 in the betting. Stoke are available at 9/2, while if you think the game will end in a draw then you can get odds of 14/5. Both sides drew their last game 1-1, and this scoreline is priced at 13/2.
Southampton to win and both teams to score at 29/10
The visitors have plenty of attacking threat in their ranks capable of troubling the scoresheet, but the Saints are still favourites for the victory.
Crouch to score the only goal of the game at 66/1
This looks like a tempting bet considering Crouch’s recent form against Southampton and the fact that the game could be a tight one decided by the odd goal.
