Southampton v Watford Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 05, 2017
St.Mary's Stadium - Premier League
Southampton welcome Watford to the south coast on Saturday, with the Saints looking to continue their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
Southampton have the edge in terms of recent meetings with the Hornets, unbeaten in their last four Premier League meetings against them, including a thrilling 4-3 win at Vicarage Road last season.
Watford's last win over the Saints was back in 2007, when both clubs were fighting for promotion from the Championship.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino can call on a fully fit squad for the visit of Marco Silva's Watford, and the former Valencia and Alaves boss is set to stick with his working formula so far this season.
This is likely to mean Fraser Forster, Mayo Yoshida, Steven Davis and Manolo Gabbiadini all retaining their place in the Saints starting line up.
The main question mark is over club captain Virgil Van Dijk, with the Dutch defender missing the start of the season due to injury and the ongoing speculation regarding a move to Liverpool. However a transfer did not materialise and now Pellegrino must decide when to bring him back into the first team fold.
Watford however have a number of players coming back from injury to boost Silva's options, but they may not be ready for a competitive return just yet.
Defender Daryl Janmaat and midfielder Roberto Pereyra are both back in training following groin injuries, but both players have made just one Premier League appearance this season.
Frenchman Younes Kaboul is also back in training from a muscular injury, but he too is lacking in match fitness and may not be risked.
Fellow defenders Craig Cathcart and Tommie Hoban remain out with knee injuries, while forward Mauro Zarate is still a few weeks away from a return following knee surgery.
Miguel Britos serves the first game of his three match suspension, following his red card against Brighton, for a horror tackle on Anthony Knockaert.
Southampton v Watford Preview and Predictions
Southampton have made an unbeaten start to the 2017-18 season, picking up goalless draws against Swansea and Brighton as well as last minute win against West Ham.
Watford have virtually mirrored the Saints start to the season, picking up two draws and an win so in 2017-18, albeit with more goals lifting them one place above their hosts this weekend and into 7th in the Premier League table.
The lack of goals will be a concern for Southampton, and they may struggle to against a Watford side that has kept a clean sheet in their last two Premier League games against Bournemouth and Brighton.
This means that an avalanche of goals is unlikely, and an under 2.5 goals bet is priced at 4/5. An underwhelming game looks to be in the offing, despite their respective unbeaten starts to the season, and they should cancel each other out on Saturday, with a draw priced at 14/5.
A 1-1 draw at 7/1
Neither side have played any particularly exciting stuff so far this season, with Watford's late draw at home to Liverpool the most entertaining, but based on drama more than quality. Southampton will want to continue their steady start, but they are in need of something to spark their season into life, and soon.
A 0-0 draw at 9/1
Between them these two sides have recorded three stalemates so far this season, two for Southampton and one for Watford, and if the game starts poorly, a fourth goalless affair of the season could be a real option on the south coast on Saturday afternoon.
