After getting smashed for seven by Manchester City at the weekend, Mark Hughes needs to pick up his Stoke players for the visit of Bournemouth. The Potters are just a couple of points above the relegation zone, while the Cherries are languishing second from bottom.
Last season Bournemouth took all three points back to the south coast from the Potteries. A first half strike from Nathan Ake was enough to secure a 1-0 win, while the teams drew 2-2 at the Vitality in the return fixture. The season before Stoke did the double over the Cherries, winning 2-1 at home and 3-1 away.
After missing Stoke’s dressing down at the Etihad due to a concussion suffered while playing for Wales, Joe Allen remains a doubt for the hosts. Boss Hughes will want the important midfielder back as soon as possible, as he continues to be without the influential Ryan Shawcross because of a back problem.
For the visitors, Ryan Fraser is getting close to a return. The Scottish winger’s failed to make an appearance so far this season after a miserable run of injuries including Achilles, ankle and hamstring problems. Callum Wilson, Tyrone Mings and Brad Smith are all expected to miss out too.
Stoke City v Bournemouth Preview and Predictions
This is a big game at the foot of the Premier League table, as a defeat for Stoke would drag them right down into a relegation battle with around a quarter of the season gone. This isn’t what Potters boss Hughes had in mind at the beginning of the campaign, and the same could be said of Eddie Howe and his Bournemouth charges after finishing in the top half last season.
There’s no doubt that Stoke’s players will have been licking their wounds this week after that mauling in Manchester. However, this is a great opportunity to bounce back against a team that’s only won once all season. The home fans will be hoping that they can see the likes of Jese, Xherdan Shaqiri and Maxim Choupo-Moting click into top gear.
Bournemouth’s solitary victory this season came against newly promoted Brighton, and they’ve lost all four of their away games so far. Howe’s team have managed just four goals, and they need Jermain Defoe to rediscover his goalscoring touch with the striker finding the net just once since his return to the south coast.
The Cherries go into this one as 14/5 underdogs, while Stoke are available at 23/20. If you think the game will end in a draw, that’s 5/2.
Stoke to win to nil at 27/10
Improve your odds on a home win as you predict that the visitors’ poor goalscoring form continues.
