Stoke City v Southampton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 26, 2017
Bet365 Stadium - Premier League
Stoke welcome Southampton to the Midlands this weekend in a clash between two of the Premier League's most out of form sides.
Stoke have a very slight edge of Southampton in terms of recent meetings, winning three of the last six Premier League meetings, alongside two Saints wins and a draw.
The most recent meeting at Stoke last season as a goal less draw, with Stoke winning the reverse fixture on the south coast 1-0, thanks to a second half goal from Peter Crouch.
Stoke manager Mark Hughes is waiting of fitness updates for five first team players before deciding his starting line up for this weekend's game.
Dutch international Bruno Martins Indi is very likely to miss out after he was withdrawn during their defeat to Chelsea last weekend with a groin injury.
Fellow defender Ryan Shawcross has returned to training following a back injury, and Hughes will wait until the last minute to decide on the match fitness of his captain.
Geoff Cameron and Kevin Wimmer also face late fitness test on hamstring injuries, with a decision expected on them both later in the week.
Southampton have welcomed back Virgil van Dijk to the first team after a summer of injury disruption and transfer speculation, however he is yet to start a game so far this season.
Defender Matt Targett is out with an ankle injury, and is not expected to be back in action until the middle of October.
Stoke City v Bournemouth Preview and Predictions
Stoke 's recent form has been dismal, without a win in six games in all competitions and an exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of Championship side Bristol City has completed a miserable September for Hughes' side.
Southampton's form is not much better, with Mauricio Pellegrino's side winning just one of their last five games in the Premier League- against struggling Crystal Palace- and losing to Manchester United last weekend.
Neither side are likely to produce a thrilling performance in this tie, with points and confidence boosts the key for both sets of players, meaning they could well cancel each other out and settle for a draw- which priced at 11/5.
Scoring goals has been an issue for both sides in recent weeks as they have struggled for both confidence and results, with Southampton scoring just once in their last four Premier League games and Stoke scoring three goals in their last four domestic games.
A low scorer looks to be on the cards at Potteries this weekend, with an under 2.5 goals bet priced at 8/13.
A 1-1 draw at 11/2
Both sides are really struggling and being sucked into a potential relegation scrap that neither would have expected at the start of the season, and they both need something to turn things around. However two similar forces going up against each other are unlikely to find much scope for free flowing football or goal scoring chances.
Xherdan Shaqiri to score first at 8/1
Swiss international Shaqiri remains Stoke's most creative player, even in their current slump in form. His ability from long range and set pieces also give him an advantage in the goal scoring stakes. He is also the last player to score for Stoke, netting in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.
