Stoke v Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 31, 2017
Bet365 Stadium - Premier League
With not much separating the sides in the Premier League table, this is massive game for both teams as Newcastle visit the Bet365 to play Stoke. Neither Mark Hughes or Rafa Benitez fancy themselves as managers that should be battling to avoid relegation, so this is the time to prove their credentials.
Jamaal Lascelles was the match winner for Newcastle earlier this season, heading in a corner after Xherdan Shaqiri had cancelled out Christian Atsu’s opener with a lovely effort. Before that game, Stoke had gone five unbeaten against the Magpies, conceding just one goal during that spell.
Kurt Zouma is available for this one after being ineligible to play against parent club Chelsea on Saturday. Erik Pieters should be fit for selection, while Ryan Shawcross and Bruno Martins Indi are expected to miss another couple of weeks through injury. Jese, Glen Johnson and Stephen Ireland are all doubts for Hughes too.
The visitors meanwhile will be without Aleksander Mitrovic, who could make his return from a back injury in the FA Cup next weekend. Florian Lejeune has a chance for this one, while Issac Hayden should be fit to play. Rob Elliot and Jesus Gamez Duarte are both out though with respective thigh and ankle injuries.
Stoke v Newcastle Preview and Predictions
It’s fair to say that both sets of supporters might’ve expected a little more from their clubs this season. As it stands, both Stoke and Newcastle are right in the relegation mix at the moment, so a win in this New Year’s Day fixture would be priceless.
The Potters at least brought their fans some Christmas cheer by winning one and drawing the other of their festive double header, but they might need a little more after the trip to Stamford Bridge. If the likes of Shaqiri, Joe Allen and Maxim Choupo-Moting perform, there are some talented players that can propel Stoke towards the top half of the table. The hosts start this one as 13/10 favourites.
After the first meeting with the Potters in September, Newcastle boss Benitez addressed his fans’ thoughts on Europe. Now the Spaniard is trying to eek some money out of a tricky situation at the top of the club to get the players in that could keep his team in the Premier League.
For all of the emphasis on splashing the cash, Benitez would do well to remember that he needs to bring the best out of the players at his disposal. It’s a squad he’s had for almost two years now, and although perhaps promises weren’t fulfilled in the summer window, it’s no excuse for some of the meek performances we’ve seen from the Magpies, who are priced at 5/2 for this game. The draw’s available at 12/5.
Both teams not to score at 21/20
This bet would’ve paid out in four of the five meetings between the teams before this season, and neither side is looking overly impressive in front of goal at the moment.
Stoke to win 1-0 at 7/1
The Potters have won their last three home games against Newcastle 1-0, and if you predict the scorer will be new hero Ramadan Sobhi the odds increase to 40/1. Peter Crouch is 28/1 to bag the only goal of the game, while Shaqiri is 33/1.
