Sunderland v Swansea Predictions, Betting Tips & Previews
May 09, 2017
Saturday May 13 – Stadium of Light – Premier League
Sunderland will be looking to drag Swansea down with them as the Welsh side are currently winning the relegation battle royale. Paul Clement’s men have outclassed Manchester United and Everton in recent weeks, so confidence will be sky high.
The Swans thrashed Sunderland 3-0 earlier this season, but lost 4-2 here in January 2016. The hosts also have history on their side, winning six from 15 and losing only two.
The home side will be without Duncan Watmore, Paddy McNair, Jan Kirchoff, Steven Pienaar and Bryan Oviedo, but it’s not all bad news as Lee Cattermole and Darron Gibson should return. As the Black Cats are already relegated, don’t be surprised if there is a shock in the starting XI.
Swansea also have a slight injury problem as Wayne Routeldge, Jefferson Montero, Angel Rangel and Nathan Dyer are all ruled out. Even though the missing four are usual first teamers, it hasn’t stopped Paul Clement from guiding his side out of the bottom three.
Sunderland vs Swansea Preview and Predictions
David Moyes’ appointment was meant to stop the endless cycle of relegation battles for Sunderland, but instead the former Manchester United man has gone the other way. The Black Cats are 17/5 underdogs despite being at home, and as it seems one of the biggest squad overhauls in English football is needed to stop the rot, they are far from guaranteed an instant return to the top flight.
Swansea meanwhile seem to have taken their opponents mantle of the side that just does enough to save themselves from the drop. Francesco Guidolin only had eight weeks to steer the Welsh side clear last season but still pulled it off, and now Paul Clement has almost done the same. Had it not been for the disastrous months of former USA coach Bob Bradley it may not have come to this, but if Gylfi Sigurdson and Fernando Llorente keep performing, the Swans are a match for any team in the league.
The away side are favourites at 10/11 and should take the win with relative ease. Llorente is favourite to open the scoring at 9/2, which is great odds for the most in-form forward in the league.
Sunderland 0-3 Swansea at 17/1
It may seem like a long shot, but the gulf in quality is huge. Sunderland have problems in attack and defence and the Swansea squad is full of hope, so expect a strong win.
Gylfi Sigurdson to score any time at 13/8
The Iceland international has been one of the best players in the league since the turn of the decade and is in every meaningful sense too good for Swansea. The former Spurs man has found the net two games in a row and has formed a devastating partnership with Llorente, and if the two can pull Everton apart, Sunderland could struggle.
