Switzerland v Costa Rica Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
June 23, 2018
Nizhny Novgorod Stadium - World Cup Group E
Switzerland have a great opportunity to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup when they play Costa Rica on Wednesday. Los Ticos have already been eliminated, so they have nothing to play for expect pride.
This will be the first competitive meeting between these countries. The last time they met was in a friendly just before the 2010 World Cup, which Costa Rica won 1-0. Switzerland won the previous meeting in 2006 by two goals to nil.
Switzerland have come through their first two games without picking up any injuries, so head coach Vladimir Petkovic has a full complement of players at his disposal. Haris Seferovic was taken off at half-time after a poor display against Serbia, so Mario Gavranovic could start in this one.
Costa Rica are also free from injury and suspension, but Oscar Ramirez could give some game time to the players who haven’t yet featured in Russia. It’d be a surprise if there were sweeping changes, but the likes of Joel Campbell and Ian Smith will be hoping for some minutes.
Switzerland v Costa Rica Preview and Predictions
After their battling point against Brazil, Switzerland pulled another performance out of the bag to beat Serbia in the closing stages of their second game on Friday. Costa Rica were on the receiving end of the late heartbreak in their match, thanks to Philippe Coutinho’s injury-time strike which Neymar added to.
Xherdan Shaqiri was the hero for Switzerland, who needed their star forward to spark into life. Petkovic’s side were awful in the first half against Serbia, but there was major improvement in the second period which helped them overturn the deficit.
Swiss fans will hope their players pick up where they left off from here, with the European nation priced at 5/6 in the betting. Costa Rica are available at 5/1, which could turn out to be decent value considering they have nothing to lose.
It could all come down to how Ramirez’s troops respond to their early exit, although the manner of their defeat on Friday was tough to take. Los Ticos will be disappointed with their showing in Russia so far after topping a group that had England, Italy and Uruguay in it four years ago. They’re capable of getting something from this game, with the draw priced at 14/5.
Both teams to score at 6/5
Costa Rica will be desperate to avoid going home without even scoring a goal, while Switzerland need a result and are 7/2 to win with both teams scoring.
Switzerland to win 2-1 at 17/2
This could be a strong bet at these odds, as Switzerland book their place in the last 16. Add Shaqiri as the first scorer and the odds rise to 38/1.
