Switzerland v England Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
June 07, 2019
Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques - Nations League
Disappointment for both England and Switzerland in the semi-finals leads to a third-placed Nations League play-off between the sides. With little up for grabs the game provides an interesting opportunity for managers to experiment before their next Euro 2020 qualifiers.
England have a strong record against Switzerland and haven’t lost to them in their last six fixtures. The most recent meeting, a post-World Cup friendly, saw a Marcus Rashford goal earn the Three Lions a win.
Switzerland may make a few changes following the defeat to Portugal, with the likes of Edmilson Fernandes hoping for a start. With Breel Embolo absent through injury, Haris Seferovic is expected to start up front yet again, with Xherdan Shaqiri featuring either on the flank or as a number 10.
Gareth Southgate is also expected to rotate heavily, although whether he opts for senior players or trials new possibilities, remains to be seen. Rashford is expected to miss out after going off at half-time of England's semi-final with a knock.
Switzerland v England Preview and Predictions
With automatic Euro 2020 qualification on the line, not to mention a rare chance at silverware, both Switzerland and England will have been disappointed not to make the Nations League final.
However, for both sides, qualification was never likely, with the Swiss heavily outclassed by a Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal, and England missing the majority of their first team due to involvement in the Champions League final.
As a result, Saturday’s game, for the English at least, is more likely to be a true test of capabilities, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Ali, Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold all able to slot back into the side. Following Rashford's injury, Kane is expected to play the full 90 minutes and is 21/20 to score at anytime.
For the Swiss, England may be seen as a more beatable opponent, as despite a decent run in the World Cup, the Three Lions have had little asked of them in the Nations League. As a result, the match could well be far more contested than a third-place play-off usually seems, with both sides looking to regain some pride.
Of course, the team’s respective managers may not see it this way, and with a summer break on the horizon, players may not either. Following a long, highly pressured season, Liverpool players in particular could be forgiven for having their heads elsewhere come Saturday, and Southgate may use this opportunity to field a couple of other options.
Joe Gomez is aiming to return to match fitness and will be glad of any game time available, whilst Callum Wilson is desperate to get a few England caps to his name. With the Bournemouth striker also reportedly looking for a transfer this summer, he’d surely appreciate the opportunity to impress.
With players looking to prove a point to the manager, and managers looking to improve player morale, Saturday’s game may well be more of a contest that expected.
Jadon Sancho to score anytime at 12/5
The winger impressed against Holland and was surprisingly brought off in the second half.
Both teams to score at 4/6
Given the lack of consequence for the result, expect an open, end-to-end encounter.
