Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
September 11, 2017
Wembley Stadium - Champions League
Tottenham host their first ever Champions League game at Wembley, against Borussia Dortmund, in what promises to be an intriguing tie.
Tottenham have a poor record against the German side, having lost their last two meetings against Peter Bosz's men back in the 2015-16 Europa League. Dortmund won 2-0 in London, thanks to a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before a resounding 3-0 victory in Germany, with Aubameyang again on the score sheet, alongside Marco Reus.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has a number of injury concerns ahead of Wednesday's night's game, although the problems are focused more on squad players than on Pochettino's likely starting XI.
Midfielder Moussa Sissoko suffered a knock in Spurs' weekend win over Everton, and he will be assessed ahead of this game.
Full back Danny Rose and midfielder Victor Wanyama are both out until the end of the month with knee ligament injuries, and forward Erik Lamela remains out with a hip problem, with a return not expected until November.
However key stars including Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld are all fit and available, and the in-form Ben Davies will continue in Rose's absence.
Dortmund suffered a major injury themselves after captain Marcel Schmelzer injured his ankle in their weekend draw with Freiburg, the injury is likely to keep him out of action for a month. Fellow defender Marc Bartra picked up a groin injury in that same game, although he could be fit in time, but he faces a late fitness test.
Bosz is already missing a number of first team stars through injury, with Reus, Raphael Guerreiro and Sebastian Rode all out with ankle problems, and forward Andre Schurrle missing with a thigh injury.
Tottenham v Dortmund Preview and Predictions
This is set to be the key game in this 'group of death', also including reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid and APOEL Nicosia, despite it being the first game. Both Tottenham and Dortmund know they are likely to find themselves it a straight shoot out for second place in this group, behind Zinedine Zidane's team, and their results against each other will be pivotal.
Tottenham have looked impressive in the Premier League this season, despite losing at home to Chelsea, and Pochettino's side were excellent in disposing of Everton last weekend as they underlined their title challenging credentials.
With August firmly behind him, star man Kane is back amongst the goals, netting two against the Toffees, and his form and threat will be needed against Dortmund on Wednesday night.
Playing their home games at Wembley is yet to become something that Tottenham are fully comfortable with, losing to Chelsea and drawing with Burnley so far in 2017-18.
Both sides will be wary of each other's threat in attack, and despite Tottenham's strong defence that will find it tough to keep out Aubameyang and Co for the whole 90 minutes, making a BTTS bet a strong option here, priced at 4/7.
With so much at stake, despite being so early on in the season, neither side will want to give too much away on Wednesday night, and a draw looks promising- priced at 5/2.
A 1-1 draw at 11/2
Both sides have plenty of options going forward, although Tottenham are better in defence, however the hosts are yet to fully settle in their temporary home this season and this could continue against the German side. Expect quality football, but a cautious approach from both managers- aware of the potential damage a defeat could do to there potential knockout round qualification hopes.
Harry Kane to score first at 3/1
Although Kane has suffered from his infamous August goal drought again this season, he bounced back to form for both club and country in the last fortnight. Two goals for England and two for Tottenham will have boosted his confidence significantly ahead of this game, and an on fire Kane is a cause for concern for any defence across Europe.
