Tottenham v Southampton Match Preview and Betting Tips
March 14, 2017
Sunday 19 March – White Hart Lane – Premier League
High flying Tottenham host Southampton on Sunday afternoon, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side looking solidify their place in the top four. Southampton have European aspirations of their own, playing catch up in the Europa League race.
These two recorded a win apiece last season, the Saints taking the points at White Hart Lane and Spurs victorious on the south coast. This year’s first meeting was an emphatic win for Tottenham, who came back from an early Virgil Van Dijk goal to win 4-1 against 10 men.
Tottenham will be without leading scorer and talisman Harry Kane, who hobbled off in their FA Cup win over Millwall, and he is likely to be sidelined for weeks with an ankle injury. Defender Danny Rose is also out with knee ligament damage, and Erik Lamela from a return. Vincent Janssen is likely to come in for Kane, or Hueng Son-Min could play centrally.
Southampton have no fresh injuries concerns ahead of this one, with captain van Dijk and striker Charlie Austin set to both miss out.
Manolo Gabbiadini should continue upfront for the Saints, with six gaols in four games for Claude Puel’s team, following his January move from Napoli.
Tottenham v Southampton Preview and Predictions
Tottenham are in fine form of late, with defeat to Liverpool in February their first domestic loss since December 2016. With Chelsea seemingly home and hosed for the Premier League title, Tottenham look determined to secure the second place finish that they surrendered to Arsenal on the last day of 2015-16.
The goals of Kane will be missed, but the supporting cast of Son Min, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen should have enough firepower to see of their visitors on Sunday.
Even without Kane Tottenham are available at a best price of 8/11 and indeed, they are odds-on across the board. Southampton can be backed at as big a price as 9/2, considering they won at the Lane last year. The draw is 3/1 but if Spurs are to solidify their second place and take advantage of Manchester City’s game against Liverpool, which guarantees at least one of their rivals will drop points, they can’t afford to not win.
Southampton bounced back from their Capital One Cup final defeat to Manchester United to beat Watford away in dramatic fashion. With Gabbiadini, Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic in their ranks, they also have a real goal threat.
However the absence of van Dijk at the back could prove to be decisive, as the Dutchman’s absence they have shipped fourteen goals, not ideal preparation for a visit to an attacking Spurs team.
Over 2.5 goals at 5/6
Even without Kane, Spurs still have goals in them, and Gabbiadini has taken well to English football. The last three editions of this fixture average three goals-per-game.
Dele Alli to score first at 11/2
If anyone will step up with Kane out, expect it to be the England midfielder. Alli’s goals will be vital during Kane’s absence.
