Tranmere v Tottenham Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
January 02, 2019
Prenton Park - FA Cup
Tranmere entertain Tottenham at Prenton Park on Friday night, as Rovers, FA Cup fans and neutrals keep their eyes peeled for an upset. Spurs are aiming to avoid being the latest big name giant killing in this storied competition.
These teams have only ever met eight times before. Two of those meetings were in the 1938/39 season, when the sides were both in Division Two. Most recently, Tottenham beat Rovers 4-0 in the FA Cup in 2002, having seen off the Super White Army by the same scoreline the year before in the League Cup.
Tottenham are likely to make some changes for this game, with a huge week on the horizon. Chelsea are coming up in the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, before Manchester United pitch up to Wembley at the weekend. Mauricio Pochettino could give the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen a rest.
Tranmere boss Micky Mellon will surely name his strongest possible XI with the chance of a massive result up for grabs. That means James Norwood should start, a 28-year-old striker who has 18 goals to his name so far this season. Conner Jennings will support him from a deeper position, but he also has four goals in four FA Cup games this term.
Tranmere v Tottenham Preview and Predictions
One of the three teams vying for the Premier League title. Ninth in League Two. Tottenham and Tranmere are worlds apart, so you might think this game is going to be a formality for Spurs. This is the FA Cup though, and things rarely work out so simply in a competition sprinkled with magic.
It would be a massive shock if Tottenham don’t get the win, and even if Tranmere manage to take the game to a replay. However, Spurs drew at Newport County in the fourth round last year, and were also taken to a replay by Rochdale after drawing away from home.
This is far from a foregone conclusion with Tottenham surely set to shake up their team ahead of a massive week of fixtures, which comes on the back of the busy festive schedule. Spurs are huge favourites to get the win though, priced at 1/5.
Tranmere meanwhile are 14/1 for a memorable victory. They already have their name written into FA Cup folklore with a 3-0 victory over local rivals Everton in 2001, which they followed up with an exciting comeback against Southampton as they reached the quarter-finals. However, beating this Spurs team is a completely different proposition. With that in mind, a draw would still be a fabulous result for the hosts, and it’s priced at 6/1.
Tottenham to win to nil at 19/20
The League Two side shouldn’t be able to get near Tottenham, who ought to have far too much quality and strength in depth for the lower league minnows.
1-1 draw at 14/1
However, the FA Cup throws up major surprises and stories each year. Tottenham were taken to replays twice last year, drawing 1-1 at Newport in the fourth round last January.
