Watford v Brighton Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
August 06, 2019
Vicarage Road - Premier League
Javi Gracia's Watford host Brighton on the Premier League opening weekend, with new Seagulls boss Graham Potter managing his first ever Premier League game.
Watford edged the meetings between these two sides in the 2018-19 season, with a 2-0 home win and 0-0 draw on the south coast. Meetings between these two have been fairly low key following Brighton's 2017 Premier League promotion, wit a win each and two draws across the last two seasons.
Gracia has confirmed that he will make a late decision on midfield pair Gerard Deulofeu and Roberto Pereyra, who are struggling for match fitness after suffering minor injuries during pre-season. The Portuguese boss has confirmed that Adalberto Penaranda, Nathaniel Chalobah and Tom Dele-Bashiru will all miss out.
New signing Craig Dawson is expected to start, although fellow new face Joao Pedro may have to settle for a place on the bench.
Brighton have no fresh injury news, with long-term absentees Jose Izquierdo, Yves Bissouma and Ezequiel Schelotto all set to miss the start of the campaign as the continue rehabilitation.
New signing Adam Webster is expected to go straight into the Seagulls defence, with potential starts for new signing Neil Maupay and Leandro Trossard for Potter's side.
Watford v Brighton Preview and Predictions
Watford faded at the end of last season, with a indifferent patch of form costing them a place in the 2019-20 Europa League, however Gracia will be confident that his side can bounce back and enjoy a strong start to the new season.
They have had a shorter pre-season than other Premier League sides, opting to play just four warm up games as part of their preparations for the 2019-20 season, with the Hornets racking up wins against Bayer Leverkusen and Real Sociedad and QPR.
Potter replaced Chris Hughton, after the former Republic of Ireland international steered Brighton away from relegation at the end of last season and the new boss will be under pressure to get off to a good start and avoid an early battle to stay out of the bottom three.
They have also enjoyed a strong pre-season campaign, with four wins out five games this summer, including an impressive 2-1 win over Champions League side Valencia last weekend.
Games between these two rarely catch fire, with low scorer and draws being the order of the day, and another draw between them on the opening weekend is priced at 12/5.
Goals have been very hard to come by when these two have faced off in the past, with three goals in four games, including two 0-0 stalemates and with that in mind, an under 2.5 total goals scored bet is available at 4/6.
A 1-1 draw at 6/1
Neither side can afford to start with a morale denting loss, and that is likely to be reflected in their respective performances this weekend. Potter simply has to start the season well, and create a positicve vibe amongst players and supporters for the season ahead, and whilst home form will be the key, they will need points on the road.
Shane Duffy to score anytime at 10/1
The imposing centre back has been in great goal scoring form in pre-season, scoring three goals in their last two games ahead of the new season, including the winner against Valencia. The former Everton man is always a threat at set pieces, and in a game likely to involve a lack of chances, that could be vital.
