Watford v Chelsea Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 24, 2018
Vicarage Road - Premier League
Goals, goals, goals has been the order of the day in recent meetings between Watford and Chelsea - will this Boxing Day clash between the teams serve up the same fare? The two clubs come into the game after contrasting results at the weekend, which could make things even more interesting.
Watford won last season’s corresponding fixture 4-1, after Chelsea were 4-2 victors at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign. The last three games between the sides have produced 18 goals, while Chelsea won three in a row with winners in the 87th minute or later before Watford’s victory in the most recent meeting.
Andre Gray, Will Hughes and Adalberto Penaranda are all out for the home team. Javi Gracia could welcome back Daryl Janmaat and Sebastian Prodl from injury, although both players are still rated as doubtful for this game.
Maurizio Sarri will be without Alvaro Morata, but the Spanish striker would’ve been on the bench anyway with the Chelsea boss looking to build his team around Eden Hazard playing in a central striking role. Andreas Christensen and Victor Moses are both injured.
Watford v Chelsea Preview and Predictions
This game could be an entertaining one between two teams who have both been inconsistent of late. Chelsea have recorded some big wins this season - not least in ending Manchester City’s unbeaten record - while Watford are riding high in seventh place. The Hornets have lost at home to Liverpool and both Manchester clubs, but they did manage to beat Tottenham 2-1.
Gracia’s side are 17/4 to get the win here, which would ensure they stay in seventh at the halfway stage of the season. It’s a hugely impressive achievement to be in that position, with the Hornets very much buzzing around the European places. Watford got an excellent 2-0 win at West Ham at the weekend, so they should come into this one full of confidence.
Chelsea meanwhile lost at home to Leicester on Saturday, a hugely disappointing result. Sarri has been trying to address the inconsistencies in his side, and one of his answers to those questions seems to be playing Hazard up front as a false nine. It’s worked at times, but Chelsea are still learning the system.
If it all comes together on Boxing Day, then we could be in for plenty of goals and a Chelsea win, which is priced at 3/4. If it doesn’t then Watford will fancy their chances of taking at least a point from this game, with the draw priced at 3/1.
Chelsea to win and BTTS at 12/5
The visitors are the favourites, but Watford were clinical last weekend and have the players to cause the Blues plenty of problems.
Last goal scored after 75 minutes at 24/25
This bet would’ve paid out in each of the last four meetings between these sides, while an over 4.5 goals bet would’ve been a winner in each of the last three - that’s 19/4 here.
