Watford v Newcastle United Predictions, Betting Tips and Previews
December 27, 2018
Vicarage Road - Premier League
Ten points separate these two teams in the Premier League table, as Watford welcome Newcastle to Vicarage Road this weekend. Both teams lost on Boxing Day, and are looking to bring their supporters some festive cheer on Saturday.
Newcastle beat Watford 1-0 last month, ending a run of five straight defeats against the Hornets across all competitions. Watford won last season’s corresponding fixture 2-1, but were even more convincing 3-0 winners at St James’ Park earlier in the campaign.
Christian Kabasele and Andre Gray are two big absentees for the home team. Will Hughes and Daryl Janmaat could both be in contention after recent injuries, although Sebastian Prodl and Adalberto Penaranda are both expected to miss out.
Ki Sung-yeung has departed for Asian Cup duty, while Florian Lejeune is injured for this game. Jonjo Shelvey is nearly ready to make a comeback, while Ciaran Clark and Karl Darlow are both doubtful for this weekend’s encounter.
Watford v Newcastle United Preview and Predictions
Watford have enjoyed a strong first half to the season, currently occupying ninth place at the midway point of the campaign. Newcastle can also be pleased with their current position of 15th and five points clear of the relegation zone, considering how they started the season.
Both teams are looking to bounce back after losing on Boxing Day, with Watford putting up a decent fight against Chelsea. They still lost 2-1 though, after winning back-to-back games before that. That includes an impressive 2-0 victory at West Ham which ended the Hammers’ winning streak, where the Hornets were clinical in the final third.
If Watford repeat that here they should get the three points, and they’re the 20/23 favourites to do so. Newcastle meanwhile are 19/5, as they look to repeat their victory over Watford from the beginning of November. That was the Magpies’ first win of the season, but they’re looking for their fifth success of the campaign here.
Rafa Benitez’s side have sprung into life after facing most of the big boys in the early weeks of the season, although winning at Vicarage Road will be a tough ask considering Watford’s form this term. With that in mind, the visitors would surely be happy with a point, with the draw priced at 11/4.
Watford to win to nil at 21/10
Newcastle have only scored 14 goals in 19 games so far this season, while Watford are strong at home having beaten the likes of Tottenham at Vicarage Road.
Deeney to score first at 6/1
The Hornets skipper opened the scoring in Watford’s recent victory at West Ham, and his team will rely on him for goals with Gray out once again.
