Watford v Sunderland Match Predictions and Betting Tips
March 28, 2017
Saturday 1 April – Vicarage Lane – Premier League
Watford welcome Sunderland to Hertfordshire as the Premier League returns to Vicarage Road on Saturday, with both teams desperate for a win. The home side will be favourites to pick up the victory, but it’s crunch time for David Moyes’ side as they bid to beat the drop.
Honours are even since Watford were promoted back to the Premier League for the last campaign, with each side recording a single victory along with a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road on the final day of the season last May.
Walter Mazzarri has a choice to make in defence, as his side have only kept one clean sheet in their last 21 games. Craig Cathcart could keep his place as the Hornets look to keep Jermaine Defoe quiet, while Troy Deeney will lead the line for the home team after his own goal gifted Crystal Palace the win last time out.
Having scored 14 of his team’s 24 goals in the Premier League, Sunderland will be hoping Defoe returns from international duty refreshed and raring to go. The 34-year-old could see his strike partner Victor Anichebe return from the knee injury that he picked up against West Brom on 21 January, in what would be a major boost for beleaguered Moyes.
Watford v Sunderland Preview and Predictions
We’re at the six-pointer stage of the Premier League season, and this game is crucial for both Watford and Sunderland. Both teams’ recent records are hugely underwhelming, with only three wins between them from their previous 24 games combined.
Although they’re seven points clear of the drop zone, Watford are in danger of being sucked back into a relegation scrap. If they win this game, at odds of 10/11, they’ll be increasingly confident of securing their top flight status for next season. However, defeat could mean the Hornets finish the weekend just four points clear of the bottom three.
It’s now or never for David Moyes and his men, who are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table seven points from safety. One win in 11 is nothing if not relegation form, and they’ll be 14 points behind Watford if they lose on Saturday, giving them one less team to catch.
However, if you think this is the game where the Black Cats start to turn things round as they secure a league double over Watford, you can get a price of 18/5. In what could be a cagey encounter given what’s at stake, the draw’s available at slightly shorter odds of 13/5.
Jermain Defoe to score first at 11/2
The man of the moment is a good price to score the first goal after bagging for England against Lithuania, while you can get him to score anytime at 21/10, or 90/1 for the hat trick.
Over 3.5 goals at 3/1
There will be some talented strikers on show at Vicarage Road, making this a decent bet considering both teams are vulnerable at the back.
